S/S 11 Beauty
I'm a bit of a romantic and a total Virgo, so there is little I enjoy more than daydreaming about an upcoming season and then plotting out a very detailed plan of attack. Fashion-wise, I have some obsessions right now--pleated maxi skirts (especially Michael Kors' leaf green version), new interpretations of my beloved bell-bottom jeans (Current/Elliott always makes great styles), and ultra-high wedges (Lanvin's nude platforms slay me)--but my beauty desires are even stronger. I'm simply swooning over all of spring's neon lipsticks and glosses; they're energetic and shockingly chic, so I want to wear them all the time. I'm also mad about earthy metallics as an alternative to typical neutral hues, as they offer a modern way to do a '70s disco look and work with more minimalist fare as well. You'll find all of my favorites in today's story--I hope you adore them as much as I do!
Topshop Eyeshadow Mousse ($16) in Tundra
In terms of fashion, the '70s are huge for spring, so I'm planning on giving that era a beauty nod with a little metallic makeup. Instead of opting for something in disco-ball silver or glittery pool-blue hues, I'm going to highlight my eyes with something a little subtler, like this Eyeshadow Mousse from Topshop in a gleaming golden khaki. I like to think of it as my modern interpretation of the era's obsession with bronze skin, shimmer, and lamé, but frankly, I'm just obsessed with this ultra-flattering shade.
Physicians Formula Cashmere Wear Ultra-Smoothing Bronzer ($13.95)
Some people think you need to splurge on your bronzer, but Physicians Formula creates products that are just as noteworthy as their pricier counterparts--especially this new Cashmere Wear Ultra-Smoothing Bronzer. The product is amazing for a number of reasons, like the fact that it gives you a touch of natural-looking color and is packed with anti-aging ingredients, like pure cashmere extract and hyaluronic acid, which help your skin look soft and smooth. Plus, the bronzer has just a hint of pearlescence--not shimmer, mind you--so you get a gorgeous glow too, always a good thing!
Beauté Liqui-Gel Stain ($29) in Flouron
A few months ago, I worked with makeup artist Beau Nelson and he introduced me to this outrageously beautiful lip stain from the brand Beauté (he's their creative director). It looks extremely vivid in the tube, but the product's very buildable, so you can go for a light wash of color or layer it for a more intense look. Between the standout hue--bright lips are it for spring--and its long-wear formula, this stain is perfect for parties and is going to be my signature lip look this season!
NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Nouveau Monde ($33)
I'm not going to lie: it was practically impossible for me to narrow it down to my favorite Nars product for this story. The spring collection is ridiculously good; there is a beautiful antique brass-colored nail polish, a lovely lime green shadow pencil, and so many gorgeous glosses to pick from, but the item I'm most obsessed with is the Duo Eyeshadow in Nouveau Monde. Comprised of one silver-lilac shade and one olive shadow, this duo is ideal to wear with all of spring's relaxed minimalist looks and offers a fresh alternative to your typical neutral eye shadows, like taupe or camel.
Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara ($10)
Of all the new products available this spring, Clinique's new Bottom Lash Mascara is the one I can't stop talking about. It has a teeny-tiny brush that's the perfect size for getting your lower lashes, plus it has a revolutionary thermal-active formula that stays perfect for up to 24 hours. No joke: it doesn't flake, smear, or smudge because it's basically waterproof, but removal is easy too (a combo of warm water and face wash takes it right off). I've tested it extensively--in my super-sweaty Tracy Anderson dance classes, in the cold wind/long days of NYFW, and on crazy party nights--and it really doesn't budge. I'm so obsessed with this mascara that I've even taken to wearing it on my top lashes too; it's amazing at getting those tiny lashes in the inner and outer corners of your eyes. Final verdict: it's a miracle product, it's a must-buy!
Dolce & Gabbana Perfect Finish Concealer ($35)
Generally speaking, I'm not wildly interested in covering my skin with heavy makeup, which is why I'm always on the hunt for latest and greatest concealer. Happily I think I might just have found the perfect version at Dolce & Gabbana. The line's new Perfect Finish Concealer is killer: it covers flaws, comes in the right colors, and it really lasts--three qualities I adore!
Urban Decay Afterglow Glide-On Cheek Tint ($24) in Bang or Crush
I've always had a soft spot for Urban Decay products--especially their peerless 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencils ($18), which are both waterproof and soft--but their new cheek tints really take the cake. The product offers everything I adore about cream blush (specifically, the way it melts into your skin for that inner-glow look), but with a weightless formula that saves you from getting that dreaded greasy "rouge" look. The Afterglow Glide-On Cheek Tint is definitely a warm-weather essential, but I adore it so much, I have a hunch I'll wear it all year long!
Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte Silky Sensual Radiant Lipstick ($34) in Provocative Pink
In addition to my obsession with neon lip stains, I'm also totally fixated on the beauty look at the Fendi S/S 11 show, as seen above. Makeup artist Peter Philips used bold pink and orange lipsticks for the runway and I'm going to emulate that look with YSL's Rouge Volupte Silky Sensual Radiant Lipstick in Provocative Pink. It's a gorgeous, vivid, electric color, plus the formula really lives up to its name, so it glides on your lips in such a lovely way.
Deborah Lippmann Nail Polish ($16) in Naked
In approximately 2 months, everyone is going to be wearing bright yellow nail polish (thanks a lot Chanel), which is why I'm welcoming the calm before the banana outburst with Deborah Lippmann's perfect nude polish. It's just the right beige--elegantly pale--so your fingers will look clean and chic, plus it's the perfect compliment to spring's rainbow-bright colors. Buy it now before the shade sells out--Lippmann's best ones always do!
Fend S/S 11 Beauty Look
When asked what my favorite spring beauty look is, I tend to rattle off at least five answers--L'Wren Scott for the acid-green shadow, Marc by Marc Jacobs for the crazy curls and orange lipstick, the straight hippie hair at Roberto Cavalli, the violet eyes at Victoria Beckham and Etro, the braids at Givenchy and Valentino--but if I had to pick only one, it would be Fendi. The blunt haircuts, deep side parts, and shocking orange and pink lips made a fantastic statement; it's exactly how I want to look right now. Of course, I rarely cut my hair and my bangs preclude much experimentation with parts, but the bright lips? Now that I can do!
