Hannah Bronfman, curator of all things cool—the multi-hyphenate is a DJ, model, restaurateur, and co-founder of wellness site HBFit—is not about to let New York City’s gray season get her wardrobe down. Keep reading for our exclusive interview.
“[This look] had a great ’70s vibe. I am loving an updated Ali MacGraw moment, and I thought this was a really good expression of that.” — Hannah Bronfman

Who What Wear: How would you describe your style in three words?
Hannah Bronfman: I would say playful, charismatic, and sleek.
WWW: What would you say is your style signature?
HB: I guess I’m always wearing some sort of piece of athleisurewear. I love to dress up, but I’m most commonly found in an Adidas sweatshirt.
WWW: What are some other ways you like to incorporate athleisurewear into your look?
HB: I think it’s really easy to incorporate athleisurewear into a grunge look, whether I’m wearing an oversize Adidas tee and a sleek pair of high-waisted black pants and a cute boot, or if I’m wearing a pair of Stan Smith [sneakers] with boyfriend jeans and a button-down [shirt]. There are so many ways to mix athleisurewear into your everyday style that don’t necessarily look like you’re going to the gym.
WWW: What do you stock your wardrobe with to combat NYC’s harsh winters?
HB: I always have turtlenecks, a good pair of boots, and a good coat, which is why I wanted to focus this story on boots and coats. We are definitely entering that time in New York where it almost doesn’t even matter what you are wearing underneath your coat. That’s all people see, and that’s what keeps you the warmest. So I was excited to do statement coats.
WWW: What do you think every woman should consider when buying a winter coat?
HB: Will this color go with most of the things that are in my closet? A lot of times you buy this statement coat, and you only wear it once because you realize none of the clothes in your closet actually go with it. You want to make sure you are on trend with your closet palette. Fabric is important. You shouldn’t be buying a silk coat. And then also cut. You want to make sure it’s going to be super flattering on you and that you are not always in this huge oversize coat where no one can see the shape that you have.
WWW: What is your favorite coat style?
HB: I like to mix it up. I love a good oversize coat. I love a good leather jacket. And I love a trench that you can really pull tight at the waist. And then a good furry hood.
“Sometimes you can almost get lost in a coat that’s so big, but having a skirt that was sexy and sleek and had a slit made it a bit dressier and very fashion-forward.” — Hannah Bronfman
WWW: How do you style your statement coat for day versus night?
HB: I think you can dress up a coat with a pair of heeled boots and a lip. I think that’s a really easy way to take it from sneakers or even flat boots.
WWW: Speaking of boots, what styles are you into right now?
HB: I’m definitely into an over-the-knee boot. I have large calves, so I’m trying to figure out what boots A) fit over my calves, B) can be worn over jeans, and C) do I want them flat or heeled? I really do love flat Chelsea boots with a nice buckle on the side. I used to not be into hardware, but now I’m getting more into it. I also love good practical boots, so something patent leather you can wear out in the snow or rain. And then I think every girl should have a pair of [Timberland boots].
WWW: What do you think can make or break an outfit?
HB: I think too many textures and patterns can be a lot. Yes, I get a print on print, but sometimes the prints don’t go well, and it just seems like you’ve tried really hard.
WWW: What was your last fashion purchase?
HB: The last thing I bought was a Phillip Lim bucket bag that I actually have with me today. It has really cute gunmetal hardware.
WWW: What inspired you to start the site HBFit?
HB: Basically with HBFit we’re trying to create a destination for women who have a like-minded lifestyle where they can go and dive into educated articles about everything that is going on in the world of wellness, explore trends, and find out our opinion on them. We take a very opinionated stance, and we’re kind of like the expert and your best friend all rolled into one, so we’re telling you what’s up and whether or not we think this is just a fad or if we actually saw results from these supplements. I think what we’re trying to explore now, since we’ve become a great online destination, is what that offline experience looks like. So exploring pop-ups and what it would mean to have an actual store or products. We’re just at our infancy, and there’s a lot that we want to get done, and we’re excited about how the community has really responded to us. We think there is a conscious shift in millennials and women right now to a more health-focused lifestyle.
WWW: When did health and fitness become such a big part of your life?
HB: I grew up as a ballerina, so I’ve always been exposed to that world. And I guess actually, to be perfectly frank, the ballet world exposed me to an extreme health-conscious world. So when I stopped dancing and my grandmother passed away from anorexia, it was a big eye-opening experience, and I wanted to lead my healthiest and happiest lifestyle. With the birth of social media, I used it showcase to my life and people were really catching on, so I figured it was a great place to start to write this longer form content.
“I love a good color palette, and I think with my skin tone and dressing it up with a lip, it goes perfectly together. When you use a neutral palette, you can get a little wild with your accessories, and the bag that I chose today was the perfect little pop.” —Hannah Bronfman

WWW: You’ve taken on so many great business ventures. What would you like to explore next?
HB: I’ve always wanted to explore the world of video, and whether that means through a digital series or a TV series, I’m definitely looking to explore a new medium in terms of my personal presence. And I’m also really intrigued with products, so I’ve always been a huge fan of natural food products, like Moon Juice with its Moon Dusts. I think there is a really interesting way to put out something that is meaningful in the food world, so I would like to explore what that would look like.
WWW: What’s your number one career tip?
HB: Don’t be afraid to ask questions and call in favors.
WWW: How do you define success?
HB: Success is measured in so many different ways. I guess success is when you hit a milestone that you’ve had on your list for a long time. There’s no goal that’s too small; you just need to keep checking your boxes.
WWW: Who do you love to follow on social?
HB: I love to follow this girl Taline Gabriel. She’s this amazing raw baker out of Australia. I love to follow Margaret Zhang for style inspiration. I love Amanda Bisk. All these people are Australian; it’s random. I love Valley Brink Road. She’s so cute. And one more would be HBFit. The Instagram is so good!
WWW: What are you listening to right now?
HB: Right now I’m listening to “Sorry” by Justin Bieber. I’m listening to Justine Skye’s new song with Vic Mensa. I just recently got Sonos, so I’m listening to a lot of stuff on Songza. And obviously Drake, Future, Ciara. It’s crazy how mainstream I’ve become.
Hair: Laura Polko for Matrix Stylelink; Makeup: Merrell Hollis; Market: Nicole Akhtarzad and Nicole Kliest.
