White Denim

Long exclusive to preppy enclaves and European resorts, this season white denim is attracting widespread interest and stepping back into the sartorial spotlight. Despite its less-than modern reputation (heck, even our go-to reference is from the late sixties: specifically Jackie O. on Skorpois wearing cropped ivory jeans with her signature black cotton crewnecks and oversized sunglasses), we've noticed that the stylish set is trying the trend anew. Fashion front-runners like Kate Moss and Kate Bosworth are working white denim into their wardrobes, combining it with boyish blazers and buckled boots or with floral tops and pastel pumps. The results of their efforts are remarkably current and completely chic-just what you want for summer!

Now, we know that the above alabaster pieces might fill you with dread, as our topic du jour certainly has a bad reputation. Though white denim is feared for its perceived unflattering effect, we can assure you that these snowy items will compliment most figures. Plus, whether it's a studded vest or a slouchy pair of shorts, you can mix these wonderful whites with just about anything: your favorite vintage-inspired fare, punky accessories, prints and patterns of all kinds, monochromatic neutrals (like those key khaki pieces), and the entire color wheel (especially neon!). And though commonly confined to the post-Memorial Day, pre-Labor day summer stretch, we predict that today's offerings will turn into important transitional pieces come fall. Just remember this: unlike your favorite baby blues, which look better the more beat up they become, a pristine pair is always preferred (bleach, please!).

Pencey Denim Vest ($292)
A waistcoat is the perfect summer pick-it adds an interesting layer to an outfit, yet is lightweight enough so you won't overheat. If you are going to spring for a vest this season, we insist you consider this piece from Pencey. The stark hue and studded hem are certainly eye-catching and would add an unexpected element of edge when worn over your favorite feminine frock.

Genetic Denim Billy Boyfriend Shorts ($187)
Though we tend to direct our fashion-crushes towards stylish stars or impeccable ensembles, we have to admit that the editors at WhoWhatWear.com became a little object-obsessed when these shorts appeared in our offices. Made by the genius team at Genetic Denim-we also adore their uber-flattering skinny jeans-these fantastic cuffed cutoffs will look smart with your favorite graphic tank and a cool pair of sandals. Trust us: these shorts are quite literally the top of the crème-colored crop!

Delia's Alena Denim Mini ($40)
When Bosworth (our denim oracle of late) was spotted at the Coachella music festival (the Delphi of summer style) wearing a jean skirt, we realized it wouldn't take an act of divination to see that this piece was due for a comeback. Try this eggshell selection from Delia's-its as easy on the wallet as it is on the eyes and will fit seamlessly into any warm-weather rotation!

7 for all Mankind Gwenevere Skinny Ankle Jean ($169)
While 7 for all Mankind offers a wide variety of ecru styles (boot-cut, bell-bottom, straight-leg, and stovepipe) we strongly suggest you check out these cropped skinnies. The fitted silhouette and exposed ankle are the perfect compliments to a sexy summer sandal. Plus, they would look great with a bohemian blouse, voluminous tunic, or-as spotted on Moss-paired with your favorite menswear-inspired blazer and worn-in boots!

American Eagle AE Jean Jacket ($50, 888.232.4535)
Clearly, the cropped and fitted jean jacket is fast overtaking the motorcycle and biker styles that were so prevalent this winter. While we assume this change is occurring because denim is easier to sport in the summer than a heavier leather layer, we also think it has something to do with the timeless appeal of this classic piece of American sportswear. This bone-white version from American Eagle provides an updated twist on the casual indigo item, and would look lovely with floral frock or vivid-colored shift.
