Technicolor Coats
Friday, November, 04, 2011 The leaves might be brown and the sky may be gray, but though your surroundings are dark and neutral that doesn't mean you need to wear these colors too! Instead of reaching for your standard outerwear options in navy, charcoal, and noir, now's the time to try something a little more vibrant. Our suggestion? Pick a coat in an ultra-bright hue to inject some serious style into your autumnal and winter outfits. Need help figuring out how to wear this statement outerwear? Check out Proenza Schouler's F/W 11 collection for guidance, as designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez showed an incredible orange Twill Coat ($2500) thrown over a black Sleeveless Leather Top ($1350) and Spiral-Print Pants ($1575). The resulting ensemble is majorly modern, irrefutably cool, and wholly inspiring, so be sure to create your own take on the trend with an equally bright coat. To help you achieve the look, we've rounded up five of our favorite technicolor options, all of which are certain to enliven your cold-weather wardrobe!

1. BB Dakota Melton Coat ($120) in Marigold
A coat in a sunny shade is a great antidote to overcast skies and abysmal weather, and we think this one by BB Dakota fits the bill perfectly. The double-breasted topper can be buttoned-up for a sophisticated, pulled-together look or left un-buttoned if you're craving a more casual option. However you style it, we're confident you'll get a lot of wear out of this chic coat this season!

2. H&M Wool Coat ($129, 310.659.5356) in Red
We can always count on H&M to give us affordable-yet-stylish versions of our favorite trends, and this Wool Coat is certainly no exception. We think its streamlined, no-frills shape balances out the look-at-me, fire engine red color nicely, making it a must-buy for anyone! Simply throw on this topper before you head out the door and all eyes will be on you.

3. J. Crew Double-Cloth Metro Coat ($298) in Oasis Green
When we spotted this ladylike coat from J. Crew, it was truly love at first sight. While many outerwear options tend to be on the bulkier side, this knee-length, feminine iteration features a universally flattering slim silhouette, which is why we're dying to get our hands on one, pronto. Teamed with a pair of brown boots, this topper makes for the perfect go-anywhere look for fall.

4. DKNY Wool Coat ($695) in Raspberry
With so many cool coats to choose from, determining our favorites was no easy task. However, when we came across this stunner from DKNY, we knew we had to feature it. The minimalist, un-fussy design reminds us of something that you see at the Jil Sander or Celine runway shows, but at a fraction of the cost! We're confident that this is one outerwear piece you'll be dying to wear all year long.

5. Diane von Furstenberg Bernice Cocoon Wool-Blend Coat ($795) in Cobalt
Everyone knows Diane von Furstenberg can make a mean wrap dress, but the designer is equally adept at producing swoon-worthy outerwear! Case in point: the fantastic Bernice Cocoon Wool-Blend Coat, which tops our list for a few reasons. We love the oversized silhouette, which gives it an easygoing, relaxed vibe that simply screams "cozy." We're also mad about the exaggerated lapels and roomy pockets, which are perfect for stashing mittens come winter. All in all, we think this cobalt coat is a worthy investment, indeed.-with Erin Fitzpatrick
