Shearling Jackets

Shearling Jackets
Thursday, September, 02, 2010 While shearling is typically associated with cozy-but-ugly footwear, when this plush fabric is put into the right hands, it becomes the key component for fall's hottest outerwear. That's right: this season, the slightly cropped shearling jacket is the must-have piece for fashion fanatics around the world. Just think of it as the next generation of the leather moto or the cold-weather replacement for your army jacket. In other words, it's the on-trend outerwear choice that will keep you toasty and terribly chic through winter's more brutal months. Whether you pick a piece that's groomed or shaggy, darkly hued or classic white, the shearling jacket is an of-the-moment statement piece and the perfect subject for today's edition of Go Buy Now!As we briefly discussed in Looking Forward To: Fall Fashion, this essential item was all over the F/W 10 runways. Though we adored the tufted versions shown at 3.1 Phillip Lim and Pringle of Scotland, the styles Christopher Bailey designed for Burberry Prorsum's fall collection are definitely hot-ticket items. Pieces like the Shearling Funnel Neck Aviator Jacket ($3595), Military Doeskin Aviator with Double Collar ($3595), and Soft Shearling Cropped Aviator Jacket with Funnel Neck ($3595) boast wildly oversized collars, loads of tumbled leather strap-and-buckle details, and enough jaunty, Amelia Earhart spirit for any fashion lover. Best of all, Bailey paired these sturdy, sizeable options with gorgeously delicate ensembles¬--like a Gauze Jersey Gathered Dress ($2495) or a Panelled Lace Pencil Skirt ($1095)¬--in utilitarian colors for a drab-meets-fab collection we adore. We're not the only ones who love the look: these jackets were so wonderfully wearable, Burberry Prorsum yielded to high customer demand and made them available for pre-order as soon as the show closed. But don't worry if you haven't gotten on the waitlists yet; we've tracked down a slew of the most stunning options out there, so be sure to start shopping today!

1. JNBY Future Curly Lamb Jacket ($2000, 212.219.2529)
Recently launched at Shopbop.com, the Chinese-based design collective JNBY is cranking out some of fall's most desirable items. Case in point: their black-on-black take on the shearling jacket. Unlike many of the other options out there, JNBY opted for a texture that is long and shaggy, giving the jacket a refined fanciness that's more luxurious that most military-inspired options. Plus, the curly lining reminds of the super cool jacket Penny Lane wore in Almost Famous, but with a more modern, cropped cut. Of course you don't have to break the bank to get your hands on an equally desirable coat. Aqua's Faux Shearling Jacket ($198) is a luxe alternative with a similar monochromatic scheme, while Meginn's Dree Faux Lather Jacket ($495) echoes JNBY's playful, shaggy lining.

2. ASOS Revive Aviator Shearling Jacket ($585)
As one of our top sources for on-trend clothing and accessories, ASOS impressed us once again with their sleek shearling jacket. The chocolate brown leather and contrasting shearling trim makes this a luxe outerwear option for both day and night. In true aviator fashion, this style comes equipped with cool buckled hardware and zip-up pockets, and would look great juxtaposed against a delicate frock. Not quite in your price range? ASOS has more great options to choose from like the Leather Aviator Jacket ($185), which comes in a similar dark brown shade and tan too!

3. Helmut Lang Shearling-Trimmed Jersey Jacket ($1175)
When it comes to this season's key shearling jacket, Helmut Lang tops our list with its ultra-chic iteration. The gray cotton-jersey contrasts nicely with the leather sleeves and the curly white lining will keep your look effortlessly cool. Wear it with a sleek maxi skirt and a stylish pair of wedge ankle boots for the perfect head-to-toe fall ensemble. If you are looking to make a similar statement without the heavy financial burden, Joe's Jeans' Shearling-Lined Cropped Zip Jacket ($198) boasts the same gray hue and funnel neckline.

4. Topshop Sheepskin Flying Jacket ($650)
We are totally smitten with Topshop's super edgy iteration of the sheepskin jacket. Once you throw on this darkly hued, heavy-duty design you instantly feel cool and warm. Additionally, we love how the exaggerated funnel collar looks very similar to the styles seen on the Burberry runway! Although we consider this to be a worthy investment indeed, Topshop also has a faux sheepskin version with the same rough and rugged attitude, the Sheepskin Biker Jacket ($160), for a fraction of the cost.

5. Bebe Shearling Oversized Collar Jacket ($149, 877.232.3777)
One of the things we like best about Bebe's shearling jacket is its distressed chocolate brown leather, which gives it a very vintage vibe. The worn-in look (also created by the off-white shearling lining) and adjustable straps at the cuff make it feel authentic¬--like an actual fighter pilot wore it! The single-breasted boxy cut reinforces the cool bomber style of the jacket, making it an easy way to incorporate a borrowed-from-the-boys element to your feminine look. And how can you resist its more than agreeable price tag?

6. Zara Shearling Jacket ($80)
Not only is Zara's Shearling Jacket the lightest option in today's story, but it also happens to be the most wallet-friendly! The design is simple, but the plush collar and thick polyester shell will give you the warmth and comfort you are looking for. The coat is cut to hit just above the hips, so it would look great teamed up with a striped t-shirt and a pair of slouchy, cuffed trousers.¬--Jessica Baker
