Fall's Red Lip
We realize that the idea of red lipstick being a new look for autumn is tantamount to saying something on par with "jeans are popular" or "try a coat for winter." In other words: highly obvious. But aside from the duh factor that is inherent in today's story, we'd like to point out that the season's rouge is neither the blood-orange tones nor the burgundy tints that have been popular as of late. Instead, the must-try lip is a beautifully bright true red: it's festive, it's fresh, it's oh-so-fall. Best of all, there are lots of brand-new lipsticks from our favorite companies (Maybelline! Dolce & Gabbana!), which means that you get the hottest hues and just-developed formulas too. We've tried and tested everything awesome on the market, dear readers, and have the right reds for all of you, so read on for more details on these WhoWhatWear.com-approved lipsticks!
Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Color ($7.50) in Very Cherry
The makeup maestros at Maybelline just launched the most perfectly named product we've seen in ages: Color Sensational Lip Color. The lipsticks are literally sensational: the colors are true, the formula is uber-rich, and the reds are some of the best we tried-period. Plus they perform beautifully; we recently wore one all day and it held up remarkably well considering how many bottles, straws, and cups we go through! The three key shades to sample are Very Cherry (seen above), Are You Red-dy, and Red Revival; if you can't pick one, they're so affordable we suggest buying all three...
MAC PRO Lipmix ($12.50, 800.387.6707) in Crimson
Every season we make a point of checking out what's new and notable at MAC, partially because we know designers always turn to the esteemed cosmetics brand for their runway beauty looks. After doing a little research, we found out that two of our favorite lip looks (from Costume National and Nathan Jenden, respectively) used the same product with gorgeous results: MAC PRO Lipmix in Crimson. The heavily pigmented product has a fantastically light texture and is worth tracking down. However, if you don't have a MAC PRO store near you and don't want to place a phone order (the phone number's above), you can substitute MAC Lipstick ($14) in Russian Red for a similar look.
Illamasqua Lipstick ($20) in Maneater
We'd heard about the amazing British beauty brand Illamasqua from our UK-dwelling friends for ages. Happily, their ravings about the line's fashion-forward spirit and cutting-edge products were right and now that the collection is carried at Sephora.com, we can enjoy it too. There are a number of don't-miss matte lipsticks we'd suggest, like Maneater (shown above) and Tramp, but definitely check out the entire range.
Napoleon Perdis DéVine Goddess Lipstick ($22) in Xenia
From its distinctive deco-inspired packaging to its seriously creamy formula, Napoleon Perdis' DéVine lipstick is definitely old-Hollywood glam. The colors are remarkably sophisticated; we like the slightly deeper red of Xenia (shown above), but you also might like the even-bolder shades of Aphrodite or Eros. Also check out Perdis' special collection for Target, specifically the NP Set Lipstick ($15) in Madrid Bright Red.
Lorac Breakthrough Performance Lipstick SPF 15 ($22) in Leading Lady
A good multi-tasker is always appreciated around the WhoWhatWear.com offices, so it's no wonder that we were excited about the new Breakthrough Performance Lipstick from Lorac. In addition to being paraben free, the lipstick's long-lasting formula is also kitted out with SPF 15 protection and the brand's exclusive anti-aging complex that helps boost collagen production. In short: healthy happy lips in a heartbreaking shade of red!
Dolce & Gabbana Classic Creme Lipstick ($30) in Iconic
Our final must-buy is from Dolce & Gabbana's just-launched cosmetics line, The Make Up, and it's a stunner. World-famous makeup artist Pat McGrath collaborated on the collection and the results are devastating. It's hard to explain how much we love everything: the packaging is perfect, the products are luxurious yet tenacious, and, most importantly, the lipstick is heavenly. We prefer the bright hue of Iconic ourselves, but Ruby is also an excellent choice. Whatever you like, definitely get thee to a Saks Fifth Avenue (where The Make Up is carried exclusively) and pick up some products today.
