Cords
Tuesday, October, 04, 2011 Much like songs and scents, certain articles of clothing can conjure up some pretty specific references. For example, plaid flannel shirts always make us think of grunge and lumberjacks, while iridescent taffeta frocks scream "80s prom" at a thousand paces. Today's topic, corduroy pants, has always been an item we associated with British countrywear and quirky, bookish men (Wes Anderson, professors)‚ but suddenly we're seeing it in a whole new light. As exemplified so beautifully by the F/W 11 Theyskens' Theory show, cords can be quite chic, which is why we think they're the perfect piece to Go Buy Now!

Part of the reason we're obsessing about cords right now is because the material has really been elevated, in both look and feel. That means modern silhouettes (everything from slouchy skinnies to flared styles), of-the-moment colors (rich jewel tones and top-notch neutrals), and incredibly soft, extremely thin fabric. If you're in need of styling suggestions, definitely take a look at the way Olivier Theyskens presented cords at his Theory show. The designer created flared cords-the Pepper Pants ($295), shown in both Greeny and Bronzy-which were styled with silky, patterned blouses, like the Printed Silk-Satin Top ($460) and the Bofi Shirt ($495). Theyskens accessorized these ensembles with ultra-long coats, pairing a silver satin ankle-grazer with similarly hued cords for a semi-monochromatic look and a bordeaux mid-calf iteration (which wasn't produced, but the Mogal Coat ($1395) is equally cool and the Suede-Trimmed Wool-Blend Coat ($1395) comes in a similar color) with brown cords for a rich-yet-relaxed look. We'll keep both of these looks in mind when creating our own cord-centric outfits this fall-as should you!

In addition to giving you the above information and inspiration, we've also gathered some of our favorite corduroy pant options on the market right now. Covering a wide range of styles, hues, and price points, there should be something in today's story for everyone, so please enjoy!

1. [BLANKNYC] Spray On Corduroys ($80) in Aubergine
If fabric means everything to you, then you'll definitely want to get your hands on these preposterously soft skinnies. They are so incredibly plush and velvety, plus the deep plum hue is perfect for fall!

2. Forever 21 Skinny Corduroy Pants ($19.80) in White
Who says you can't wear white pants after Labor Day? Not us! In fact, we think these skinny cords would look super cute as part of an all-white ensemble (just check out Isabel Marant's F/W 11 runway for styling ideas) or worn ultra-casually with a denim shirt. One thing's for sure: the price is certainly right!

3. Mother The Hazer Cords ($198, 310.860.1617) in Mustard
We've adored all of Mother's amazing, au courant styles thus far, including this incredibly flattering-swear-pair of patch-pocket cords. Available in the amazing mustard hue shown above, as well as cognac and black, these pants would look so cool paired with a striped poncho.

4. Gap 1969 Corduroy Skinny Boyfriend Pants ($69.95) in Lagoon Teel
Slouchy up top and slimmer down south, the Gap 1969's Skinny Boyfriend Pants just might be the perfect casual option for fall.
