MAJOR: Two Very Stylish Celebs Scored a Magazine Cover with Michelle Obama

Jessica Schiffer

Glamour really went above and beyond for their May cover, which features not just the First Lady Michelle Obama, but actresses Kerry Washington and Sarah Jessica Parker to boot. Contributing to the cover’s allure are the pale pink Narciso Rodriguez sheaths worn by Obama and Washington, alongside Parker’s printed frock by Oscar de la Renta. Aptly emblazoned with the words “Power Women,” the cover is quite the trifecta—albeit an unexpected one. So what brings them together? A really good cause, of course: to bring attention to America’s servicewomen, veterans and military wives, a group that receives too little attention.

While Obama has championed this cause since her initial days on the campaign trail with her husband, Washington and Parker came to it for personal reasons—both women have had close family and friends serve in the military. In the accompanying interview with Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive, Parker highlights the importance of this subject, saying:

“I feel like there's a laundry list of issues [these women] face... Being a working mother, serving, returning from Iraq or Afghanistan—I almost don't know where to begin... And I feel intimidated by their service; I feel ashamed that I haven't served. So I almost feel like I'm patronizing by inquiring how to help. When you see a serviceman or -woman, you always—I always—say, ‘Thank you for your service.’ But you know that's not enough.”
