Olivia Thirlby

Olivia Thirlby
We've never actually hung out with the uber-talented Olivia Thirlby, but from the looks of her down-to-earth sense of style, we can tell the actress is our kind of girl. Thirlby--who stars in the action thriller Dredd3D, in theaters now, and the indie flick Nobody Walks, out October 19th--popped up on our radar after recently hitting the red carpet and numerous press events outfitted in a range of striking ensembles. The starlet often embraces a timeless femininity, but you can see she has an edgier side too, and most noteworthy, a knack for making the latest trends her own. And it's that kind of sartorial versatility that landed Thirlby in our October Girl of the Month story!

On The Red Carpet
One of the things we love about Thirlby is that her outfit formula is rarely the same, but always on-point. That was the case at the New York premiere of Dredd3D, when our GOTM showed up in Vena Cava's Sassy Dress (for similar styles click here) and went for a dramatic beauty look, consisting of a smoky eye and quiff hairdo. From subtly provocative to ladylike, two days later at the Dredd3D premiere in Austin, Thirlby caught our eye in Nina Ricci's Dentelle Lace Wool Top ($564) paired with Prabal Gurung's Pink Kaleidoscope Print Silk-Wool Pencil Skirt ($895) and Balenciaga heels, proving she can pull off a polished, elegant ensemble with ease too.

When it comes to less formal occasions, Thirlby often reaches for pieces with a boyish quality. Consider the summer-appropriate Acne Blake Soft Denim Blazer ($219) and matching Bacall Shorts ($186) she wore to an appearance at Comic-Con a few months ago, for example, or the relaxed velvet blazer and pants combo she wore to the after-party for the play Lonely, I'm Not. While both outfits have that distinct menswear vibe, she personalized them by incorporating feminine elements, like Carven for Robert Clergerie's hot pink loafers or peek-a-boo underpinnings. Get Her Look
Sandro Jekyll Blue Blouse ($250)
Channel Thirlby's masculine-feminine styling with Sandro's Jekyll Blouse. This anything-but-basic chambray shirt gets major points for its versatility: style it under a neutral pantsuit to update your nine-to-five uniform, or wear it with a kicky circle skirt for a current weekend look. Either way, the compliments will come rolling in!

Mathias Chaize Silver and Gold-Plated Lightning Bolt Necklace ($100)
We adore the pendant necklace Thirlby wore to the Lonely, I'm Not after-party, so when we spotted a similar style by Mathias Chaize we gasped with delight! The necklace may be delicate-perfect for everyday wear-but believe us, the silver and gold lightning bolt pendants make a statement.

Topshop Co-Ord Lace Shadow Blazer ($136)
If Thirlby was going to add a new blazer to her already chic repertoire, we have a feeling it might be this printed version from Topshop. The lace pattern is a bit unexpected, a quality we're positive our GOTM would love, but its tailored fit will add some on-trend polish to your winter wardrobe.

Rebecca Taylor Pleated Gown ($450)
Given Thirlby's affinity for effortless femininity, we can't think of a more perfect piece for today's story than this Rebecca Taylor gown. The accordion pleat detailing gives the frock ethereal movement, while the drawstring waistline creates a flattering silhouette. Add a denim jacket to dress it down for day, then come evening, throw on a smattering of gold jewelry for an elegant look.

Aveda Brilliant Humectant Pomade ($20)
We're crazy for Thirlby's bob, and are even more mesmerized by its perfectly shiny and wavy texture. So how does one go about getting this look? The key is Aveda's Brilliant Humectant Pomade, which helps eliminate frizz and enhance natural curls.

Maria Sharapova by Cole Haan Sage Booties ($248)
Chances are you'll invest in a few different boot styles this fall, but if you have your heart set on copping Thirlby's look, Cole Haan's Sage Booties should be number one on your list. Just like our subject, they're classic with a bit of edge, thanks to the gold zipper detailing. While Thirlby might style them with cropped pants, we like the idea of pairing them with a fluted mini skirt and opaque tights for date night.

J. Crew Collection Skirt ($325) in Rush Hour Black
After spotting Thirlby in Prabal Gurung's amazing shiny pencil skirt, we made it our mission to find a suitable alternative. J. Crew came through with its Collection Skirt, which gets its shimmer from tiny woven metallic threads. Just be sure to follow Thirlby's lead, and wear it with a lacy top for a professionally chic result.

Aldo Gerke Clutch ($50) in Fuchsia
We like a bag that works double duty and have a feeling Thirlby does too, which is why we've got our eye on Aldo's Gerke Clutch. Not only is the carrier equipped with a removable chain-link strap that allows for hands-free toting during the day and transforms into a chic clutch for night, it's also available in a slew of gorgeous autumnal hues, like fuchsia and marigold.--Jessica Baker
