Velvet Skirt

Velvet Skirt
Monday, November, 14, 2011 Sartorially speaking, one of our favorite things about the holidays is planning perfect party looks for all the festive gatherings. And while a cocktail dress is a foolproof choice for these occasions, this season we're looking to switch it up a bit and plan on going for statement-making velvet skirts instead! Why, you might ask? The exquisite fabric will instantly add a certain element of luxury to any outfit, plus there are a slew of interesting options on the market (think: sumptuous colors, interesting prints), so creating a dazzling ensemble is easy! That said, we know this skirt can often be a tricky piece to wear-nobody wants to look like they're wearing a velvet curtain-which is why we've tracked down four amazing options as well as a few essential items to help you Get The Look!

If styling a velvet skirt leaves you puzzled, simply look to model Anouck Lepere as your guide. She attended The Huffington Post's Game Changers Awards last month in New York wearing a velvet skirt-centric ensemble that managed to be the perfect combination of understated, downtown cool and soignee sophistication. To achieve said look, Lepere paired a gunmetal velvet Missoni pencil skirt with a slouchy Max Mara tank, Tabitha Simmons' Cutout Lizard Ankle-Wrap Sandals ($1795), and chic jewels, including a Repossi Berbere Ring ($5455) and an Arielle de Pinto woven chain necklace (the Tri-Strand Oxidized Silver and Palladium Necklace ($650) is quite similar.) We think her decision to opt for a relaxed, neutral tank and minimal jewelry works well because it allows her superb skirt to take center stage. Plus, we're mad about her fantastic heels, which add interest to the outfit without stealing the spotlight from the skirt.

Crazy about this look? Get ready to rejoice because we've sourced a quartet of velvet skirts that we know you'll adore and some key pieces to wear with them! So, what are you waiting for? Get shopping!

Marc by Marc Jacobs Jagz Velvet Midi Skirt ($400)
If you want to make a bold statement this fall and winter, look no further than this Marc by Marc Jacobs skirt. We love its rich, autumnal hues and of-the-moment midi length, not to mention the eye-catching chevron pattern. All in all, you simply can't go wrong with this stunning version of our skirt du jour.

Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent Velvet Maxi Skirt ($295) in Silver
As devoted fans of the maxi skirt, we're always searching for fresh takes on this wardrobe staple, hence our inclusion of this iteration by Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent. We're smitten with its luminous, almost silky look, which makes us want to get our hands on one pronto! No doubt this showstopper will turn heads at any festive fete.

MINKPINK Russian Roulette Printed Burnout Velvet Skirt ($108)
When we came across this lovely paisley-printed skirt by MINKPINK, we knew it was a must for today's story. Our reasoning? The simple shape plus the muted color palette equals one extremely versatile choice that we'll want to wear all season long. Better snag one before it's too late!

American Apparel Velvet Pencil Skirt ($40) in Green
On a budget this holiday season? No need to fret, because we've found an ultra-chic option that won't break the bank. With its sleek, slim-fitting silhouette and striking emerald color, this pencil skirt is a sophisticated choice for any after-dark soiree.

Now that you've got four supremely stylish skirt options to choose from, we want to turn your attention to a handful of pieces that will perfectly complement whatever version you pick. First up is ADAM'S Silk-Georgette Tank ($180), which is a wear-with-anything choice that's a spot-on alternative to Lepere's top. Since bare shoulders won't cut it come winter, we suggest picking up a fantastic topper to keep toasty. We love the idea of mixing luxurious velvet with rough-and-tumble leather, so we simply had to include BLK DNM's Leather Jacket 1 ($700). It's the perfect masculine piece to juxtapose with the inherently feminine velvet skirt. As far as a jewelry option, emulate Lepere and keep it simple by snagging Vanessa Mooney's Spear Me Necklace ($62), which is a stylish choice for festive gatherings and weekend errands alike. Then add Diane von Furstenberg Indigo High Heel Sandals ($280) in Gold Crackle/Black, which will definitely up the chic factor. All that's left to do? RSVP to that holiday party because you're going to want to show off your new velvet skirt ensemble!-Erin Fitzpatrick
