Get The Look: Kate Mara

Dinner with the President is never a casual affair. At last weekend’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Kate Mara balanced her conservative white Prada gown with a smoky eye and slicked-back bun--a politically correct combination. Mara knows her way around Washington at this point--she stars on Netflix’s House of Cards as Zoe Barnes, a D.C. reporter caught in a tangled web of government--even if it’s just on the small screen. Whether you swing left, right, or dead center, this is one look on which everyone can agree.

To keep Mara’s skin radiant, Turnbow only applied powder to the actress’ T-zone, opting for Bare Escentuals’ Touch Up Veil SPF 15 ($22) in Translucent. “This powder is mattifying, but it also kind of blurs and airbrushes imperfections in a nice, fresh way,” she says.

Mara wore a white dress, but her accessories and nails were rich shades of green and blue, so Turnbow created a navy smoky eye. She started with Kevyn Aucoin’s The Loose Shimmer Eyeshadow ($28) in Lapis, concentrating the powder on the actress’ lid and inner corner.

A bold eye calls for a nude lip, so Turnbow applied Jouer’s Moisturizing Lip Gloss ($20) in Nude to Mara’s pout.

“Whenever you do an updo it’s best to curl the hair first,” hairstylist Brian Magallones says. “It makes hair go into a bun easily and you won’t get flyaways.” Once curled, he smoothed KMS California’s Hair Play Gel Wax ($18) through Mara’s locks from roots to tip. “This is like a gel, but it won’t get stiff,” he says. He made a deep side part, angling it toward the middle of her crown.

Magallones pulled Mara’s hair into a low ponytail, secured it, and made a bun, leaving out a small section from the bottom of the pony. “I braided the small section and wrapped it around the bun for a little extra texture,” he says. Magallones layered KMS’ Hair Stay Maximum Hold Hair Spray ($17) under Rene Furterer’s Glossing Spray Luminous Shine Spray ($23) for all-night shine and hold.
