Summer Party Hair

At this point in the summer we've settled comfortably into two looks: beachy waves or a messy topknot. Clearly our routine needs a kick in the pants—or a dose of inspiration, at the very least.

    Candice Swanepoel, by Frankie Foye

Step 1: "The trick to the braid is adding in extra human hair," says Frankie Foye of Candice Swanepoel's romantic look. The extension should be about one inch wide and equal in length to your own hair; prep it with mousse and dry shampoo.

Step 2: Clip the extension behind your left ear and pull what will be the other two sections of your hair over the clip; start braiding. "This will obviously be easier if you're pretty good at French braiding your own hair," Foye points out.

Step 3: After securing the braid with a clear elastic and pinning the end behind your right ear, spray Oribe's Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray ($35) on a blush brush and brush it on top of the braid. "That's what makes the texture come to life," Foye says.

    Erin Wasson, by Marcus Francis

Step 1: Using the arch of your eyebrow as a guide, make an exaggerated side part. "Since you're bringing hair over that isn't used to being in a different direction, getting the hairs to lay flat can be a little tricky," says Marcus Francis of Erin Wasson's look. Spray damp hair with a thickener, like Phytovolume Actif Maximizing Volume Spray ($28), to manipulate the roots.

Step 2: Blow dry upside down.  Then use a paddle brush to flatten the top. "Aim the blow dryer at the hairline, brushing the hair back so the tension helps straighten and smooth," he says.

Step 3: Use different sized curling irons for a polished version of the natural waves that are Wasson's signature. "Spray Fekkai's Tousled Wave Spray ($25) all over to keep the hair thick and textured," Francis adds.

    Miranda Kerr, by Renya Xydis

Step 1: Blow dry your hair without using any product and then pick up your flat iron. "I used a Cloud 9 Iron ($200) to give it that shine and polish," says Renya Xydis of Kerr's sleek ponytail.

Step 2: Use a surf spray on key areas. "I used Wella Sea Salt Spray ($6) at the crown and just a bit up the front--not on the ends--and shook it through with a blow dryer," said Xydis.

Step 3: Brush the sides back as tight as you can--"not the front, because it looks a bit more modern and young with some volume"--and secure with an elastic.

    Harley Viera-Newton, by Vensette

Step 1: Apply Shu Uemura Satin Design Polishing Satin Milk ($38) and Moroccanoil Hair Treatment ($32) to clean wet hair. Then blow dry the hair with a 100% boar bristle brush for the smooth, shiny finish that anchors this style.

Step 2: Run a flat iron through the hair before parting it down the middle and securing a low ponytail behind each ear.

Step 3: You're going to braid two fishtail braids, but the trick is to braid forward so that you get the crowning effect you see on Viera-Newton. You can secure each with a clear elastic from Goody ($3), but you'll take them out when you pull each braid across the head and secure with bobby pins (in the same color as your own hair). Finish the style by spraying your whole head with hairspray.

    Jessica Biel, by Mara Roszak

Step 1: Tackle the fringe. "I like to blow dry the bangs first, while they're still damp, because they're easier to manipulate before they dry," Mara Roszak says of Jessica Biel's retro ponytail.

Step 2: "Apply Phytovolume Actif Maximizing Volume Spray ($28) to damp hair and blow dry with a round brush," Roszak says. Building pin curls out of each section will amp up the volume, too. On Biel, Roszak sprayed Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray ($25) all over the hair--lightly!--before removing the pins and gently brushing out her strands.

Step 3: Break out a comb and tease the crown, then pull hair back into a mid-height pony and secure with a clear elastic.
