Traditional awards shows aren't necessarily the best place to try out a groundbreaking beauty look, but a few women did think outside the box at the Emmy Awards on Sunday, accessorizing their princess gowns with messy up-dos, dramatic cat eyes, and bright lips. Read on for our favorite looks and a few tips for stealing their look at home.

Ginnifer Goodwin

Goodwin's pixie cut is the perfect foil for a dramatic retro eye. Makeup artist Mai Quynh gave her the Twiggy-inspired look using just the black shade from Mark Keep It Going Longwear Eyeliner & Shadow Duo ($11) in Entourage, a palette that also includes a silver shadow. "I applied the black color to the outer crease of the eye, then outlined the top crease and top lash line using a flat eyeliner brush," she said.

Mindy Kaling

Kaling's makeup artist, Kindra Mann, was inspired by Bianca Jagger's 1974 Vogue cover. So she lined Mindy's eyes with Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream Eyeliner ($23) in Black and used two different eye shadows--Tarte's Amazonian Clay Cream Eye Shadow ($19) in Shimmering Moss and Stila's Eye Shadow ($20) in Ebony--to score the ultimate smoky eye.

Tina Fey

Hairstylist Richard Marin went for "swept-back hair with an edge" for Fey, who--as the executive producer, head writer, and star of 30 Rock--had more than one reason to look great on Sunday. He lightly curled her hair with Remington's Keratin Therapy 1 1/2 inch Curling Wand ($30) then teased the roots for volume before twisting 2-inch sections back and pinning, leaving the straight ends poking out.

Zooey Deschanel

Whether she's wearing a Peter Pan collar or a ballgown, the New Girl actress always has perfectly flushed cheeks. On Sunday, makeup artist Jorjee Douglass used both Hourglass' Aura Sheer Cheek Stain ($45) in Flush and Dior's Rosy Glow ($44) in 001 Petal.

Lena Dunham

Emilia Clarke

We almost didn't recognize the Game of Thrones star without the bare face and white-blonde hair Clarke has on the show, proving what a beauty chameleon this English actress can be. Makeup artist Dawn Broussard gave her a soft, polished look by staying in one complementary color palette--dusty rose. As for the exact products Broussard used: Chanel's Quadra Eyeshadow ($58) in Mystic, Powder Blush ($43) in Rose Petale and Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour ($34) in Gracile.

Kat Dennings

Makeup artist Beau Nelson lined Dennings' voluptuous lips with Nars' Lip Pencil ($22) in Amazon and then filled them in with Hourglass' Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick ($28) in Icon. If you ever need a lipstick to stay on for 14 hours, this is your best bet.
