There seem to be as many types of weddings as there are body shapes-in other words: lots!-so it's hard to have a fashion formula that's both appropriate and stylish in your back pocket. After all, a black-tie affair at an art museum in San Francisco is going to be quite different than a rustic barn wedding in the Berkshires. But after much thought, and attending a million weddings ourselves, we have identified the perfect soiree style: a party dress and a tux jacket! Styling Note #1: The dress needs to feel festive and have a defined waist. You must vow to go for something with a nipped-in waist; it will help keep the overall outfit sleek and ensures the tux jacket won't look bulky. As for frock options, you can definitely go for a print (geometric and moody tie-dye are two strong options); just make sure you've selected an appropriately formal material in a fall-influenced color palette. Lace is another smart choice; we like black and neutral versions or rich jewel tones. Another idea is to nod to the season's trends with a luxurious jacquard or brocade dress, as both can definitely work for a wedding. Styling Note #2: The jacket must be tailored and have a sleek lapel. When picking out your tux jacket, promise to look for a classic iteration of this menswear staple. Investing in an amazing black version you'll wear forever is never a bad idea, but of course there are other options. You could try a color like navy or bordeaux, and we always love a contrasting lapel too. Metallics can be particularly festive as well, whether you go for just a hint of razzle-dazzle or full-blown sequins. Whatever tux/dress combination you fall in love with, we promise this fail-safe ensemble will work for you in good times and bad!
