Emily Blunt's Stylist Gives Us the Inside Scoop on Her Met Ball Look

Sarah King

Remember when Emily Blunt played “first assistant” to Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada and had to announce each Met Gala attendee upon their red carpet arrival? Fast-forward 10 years, and Blunt is one of the event’s most well-known guests. At tonight’s gathering, not at all to our surprise, the mom-to-be stunned as she made her grand entrance into the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her stylist, Jessica Paster, sent her off in a beaded blue gown by Michael Kors, an excellent choice that so elegantly reflects this year’s technology-related theme.

Paster kindly took time out of her busy schedule to provide us with some background on Blunt’s Met Gala look. Read on for our interview.

WHO WHAT WEAR: Where did you draw inspiration for Blunt’s look at this year’s "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology"–themed Met Ball?

JESSICA PASTER: What I took from this year’s Met Ball theme is the technology of fabric, so we wanted beautiful beading, and we wanted something comfortable to accommodate the pregnancy but still suit the theme.

WWW: What does your process consist of, in terms of dressing a star like Blunt for a major fashion event? How far in advance did you begin to plan her look?

JP: I had been talking to Michael Kors in December. We start prepping for all the accessories, and I always keep my eyes open for something beautiful in advance. I’ve always been a fan of Michael Kors. We knew back in December that we wanted to go with Michael ever since she wore the gold cutout dress to the Golden Globes.

WWW: In what ways has her pregnancy played a role in tonight’s look?

JP: Emily is always very collaborative. The one thing she wanted was sleek, sexy, long sleeves, because she was so far into her pregnancy.

WWW: Please tell us about the jewelry! How did you go about selecting the appropriate diamonds for this ensemble?

JP: At first, I asked Forevermark to give me every piece of jewelry. Then I edited it, and just before we leave is the final edit. I wanted something beautiful to suit the theme. Forevermark makes gorgeous diamonds. It was about impact that complimented the gorgeous Michael Kors design.

WWW: Overall, what has been the most exciting aspect of prepping this look?

JP: Emily just loved the color when she saw it. All she said was "GOOOOOORGEOUSNESS." Dressing her for the Met Gala this year was so much fun. The technology-meets-fashion theme was incredible, and I thought of Forevermark because its one-of-a-kind inscription on each diamond was perfect for the theme.

WWW: What’s something that most people would be surprised about dressing a celebrity for the red carpet?

JP: It’s all exciting, even after 20 years. People would be most surprised that celebs are the ones who are calm and collected through the whole process.

WWW: How close to the red carpet can things change, in regards to what she is wearing?

JP: Things can change literally the day of. Until they walk out on the red carpet, everything can change.

WWW: How many options do you pull to narrow down to one final dress?

JP: Anywhere from five dresses to 50.
