S/S 10 Handbags
Kate Lanphear, Style Director, Elle | Emilio Pucci Suede Studded Shoulder Bag ($2112)
For style stalkers who follow what editors wear outside of fashion shows as much as what designs show on the catwalk, there is no denying the cult of Kate Lanphear. Known for her black-on-black wardrobe, shock of bleach blonde hair, and take-no-prisoners heels, Lanphear's behind-the-scenes élan is as influential as the pages she styles for Elle. This spring, Lanphear is all about Emilio Pucci's Suede Studded bag; the metallic adorned flap and chain strap are perfectly in line with Lanphear's style credo, yet the decorative gold clasp adds a bit of haute gypsy into the mix. Of course, we've sussed out a couple of substitutions for her exact Peter Dundas for Pucci design: try 3.1 Phillip Lim's Edie Studded Leather Handbag ($700) or Tory Burch's Amanda Mini Bag ($350). If you are a fan of Lanphear's fashion-forward flare, you'll definitely adore these excellent alternatives!
Dani Stahl, Style Director, Nylon | Burberry Sling Bag ($1195, 310.550.4500)
Though she's considered a downtown darling, Nylon's Dani Stahl opted for a decidedly uptown spring satchel: the Burberry Sling. With feminine ruching and a classic baguette-esque shape, this accessory is the epitome of chic. And while this style comes in a variety of colors and materials (be sure to check them out here!), we love how the Nylon trendsetter took to a pale textured leather bag. (It will look great with spring's new neutrals.) Of course, feel free to try Rampage's Krista Hobo ($89) to get that high-fashion look for a high-street price-we're sure Ms. Stahl would heartily approve!
Jane Keltner, Fashion News Director, Teen Vogue | Proenza Schouler PS1 Bag ($1595)
Jane Keltner, the lovely Fashion News Director at Teen Vogue, not only has an eye for the most covetable carryalls, but she also possesses a wise investment strategy, to boot. By limiting herself to one or two new bags a year, Keltner makes sure that her choices are as timeless as they are chic-nothing with logos or branding (a sentiment echoed by big Vogue's Meredith Melling Burke) and something that will be effortless and evergreen (no "one-season-wonders," thank you very much!). Keltner heralds the PS 1 as the "new classic, like the Balenciaga motorcycle bags," and everyone from Chloe Sevigny to Leighton Meester agrees. Keltner already owns the black version, but for spring she's all about the soft gray (if a style sage like Keltner is going back for seconds, you know it's a key piece for this season and beyond!) Of course, if you can't track down the must-have PS1, or want to try something a little more budget friendly, we have a few pieces that will satisfy your cravings. Coach's Sydney Metallic Leather Shoulder Flap ($798), Francesco Biasia's Motion Flap Shoulder Bag ($650), or Steven by Steve Madden's Off The Hinges Leather Satchel ($238) are all gorgeous gray alternatives.
Nina Garcia, Fashion Director, Marie Claire | Celine Calfskin Luggage Bag ($2150, 212.826.8900)
The fashion world is still buzzing about Phoebe Philo's impeccable first collections at Celine, and for good reason. The clean lines, unfussy tailoring, and sporty silhouettes are on the top of every most-wanted list. Of course that extends to Philo's first accessory outing at the famed French house. As Nina Garcia, Marie Claire's Fashion Director succinctly puts it, the handbags, such as her must-have Calfskin Luggage style, marries the "utilitarianism and understated elegance" of Celine's S/S 10 collection, and is most certainly spring's status satchel if there ever was one! Be sure to check out this celebrity and editorial all star (Mary Kate Olsen has also been spotted toting this style around town) or, for a few more budget-friendly alternatives, try Coach's New Leather Charm Tote ($398) or Furla's Corniola Bag ($525).
Meredith Melling Burke, Senior Market Editor, Vogue | Marc Jacobs Clutch ($290)
Meredith Melling Burke has an encyclopedic knowledge of all things chic; after all, as Vogue's Senior Market Editor, it's her job! Luckily for us, she was gracious enough to shed some light on the season's most stylish satchels, and we couldn't be more thrilled with the results. Though Melling Burke cited Miu Miu, Celine, and Proenza Schouler as contenders, we were quite taken with her revolutionary selection of the daytime clutch-specifically Marc Jacob's Lock Clutch ($290). Just big enough to stow your necessities, there's something incredibly modern and refreshing about the size (and price!) of this handy bag. In fact, we have a sneaking suspicion that her selection will catch on immediately. Everyone get out your egg-timers now, because trust us, if Melling Burke is doing it, it's only a matter of minutes before the trend blows up!
