While some of you may remember that paillettes played a major role in Prada's F/W 11 collection, we should note that these iridescent, scale-like sequins have shimmied their way into the spotlight for spring and summer too! In fact, we've spotted them on everything from glamorous tops to slinky dresses, as well as party-perfect skirts! And seeing as Paltrow's paillette pockets landed her on the top of many a best-dressed list that evening, including our own, we jumped at this DIY opportunity. With Erica Domesek of P.S. I Made This as our right-hand woman, we assembled a nifty Prada-inspired skirt that is bound to garner loads of attention, so read on for all of the need-to-know directions. Also, in celebration of tonight's premiere of TLC's new competition show, Craft Wars, judge Domesek has shared her five DIY essentials for summer, which you can see exclusively on our blog now!--Jessica Baker
American Apparel Jersey Pocket Skirt ($30)
-6mm Sequins ($4)
-20mm Paillettes ($6)
-Needle & Thread
-Aleene's Tacky Glue ($5)
1. Place your skirt so that it lies completely flat on a sturdy surface. Using the multicolored paillettes and a stapler, secure each paillette to the skirt's pockets, starting at the bottom and working your way up to the top. Make sure to completely cover the pocket, alternate colors, and overlap as you go.
2. Once the entire pocket is covered with the paillettes, glue smaller sequins along the top of the pocket so that they cover the staples. Note: you can also scatter and glue small clusters of sequins on top of the paillettes for more texture. Wait approximately 20 minutes until the glue is completely dry.
3. Once the glue is completely dry, use a needle and thread to stitch some of the smaller sequins to the top of the pocket.
