The Important Reason Everyone Is Wearing Denim Today

Michelle Scanga

If you’ve noticed an overwhelming amount of #DenimDay posts on social media today, there’s a very important reason. For the past 16 years, Peace Over Violence has run the Denim Day campaign on a Wednesday in April, which is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Denim Day is a global campaign originally triggered by a ruling in the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the victim was wearing skinny jeans. The Justices' reasoning? Because the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her rapist remove them, thereby implying consent. In a protest against the ruling and to show solidarity with the victim, the very next day women in the Italian Parliament showed up to work wearing jeans.

In honor of Denim Day 2015, the GUESS Foundation will donate $2 for every pair of jeans and select accessories to Peace Over Violence through the end of the day.
