The Little Mermaid
The Sartorial Story
Assuming most of you are familiar with this classic Disney animated film, we thought we'd skip the plotline and dive straight into the movie's sartorial influences. Though The Little Mermaid doesn't offer much in the way of clothing-the mermaids are simply clad in shell tops and shimmering tails-several S/S 12 collections did pay homage to the movie's colorful sea life. For example, Donatella Versace took us to the depths of the sea with a slew of pastel starfish and seahorse prints covering everything from bustier tops to scuba dresses, while Karl Lagerfeld transformed the Chanel runway into a dreamy underwater world filled with conch-shell clutches and seaweed-inspired confections. Keeping those runway references fresh in our minds, we assembled our very own sartorial reinterpretation of The Little Mermaid, complete with the perfect purple bikini and not one but two opulent baubles. While we can't guarantee today's selections will help you become the next sea princess, we're sure you'll find a few stellar items to add to your summer wardrobe!

Ann Taylor Electric Garden Necklace ($148)
Featuring a mélange of modern graphic shapes and candy-colored jewels, this statement necklace from Ann Taylor reminds us of a vibrant coral reef or something you might find in Ariel's treasure collection. Whether you wear it with a high-neck halter dress for an evening fete or use it to upgrade a casual t-shirt, this decadent bauble is perfect for adding a touch of The Little Mermaid into your day-to-day wardrobe.
French Connection Pearl Queen Strappy Dress ($498)
Channeling The Little Mermaid calls for a shimmering, statement-making frock, which brings us to our next standout selection: French Connection's Pearl Queen Strappy Dress. With a decorative cutout neckline and subtly sultry slits on either side, this pearlescent sequin number is perfect for a night on the town. Just be sure to add sleek ankle-strap heels and a gold cuff for a polished and elegant finish.
Reiss Kaylin Clutch ($210) in Light Gold
Chanel's resin shell clutches are pretty amazing, to say the least, but fortunately for those of us on a budget this season, you don't have to invest quite so much to get the look. Take Reiss' Kaylin Clutch, for example. The silver and gold seashell case is the perfect nod to spring's underwater trend and is sure to add charm to any after-hours ensemble. Prefer a hands-free carrier? Lucky for you, this petite clutch comes equipped with a detachable chain shoulder strap, making it ideal for the girl on the go!
Yves Saint Laurent Gold-Plated Starfish Ring ($440)
For a subtle take on today's underwater look, slip on this glamorous cocktail ring by Yves Saint Laurent. The gold-plated starfish with an embellished blue enamel stone packs a punch in terms of style, offering a simple way to incorporate some ocean-inspired luxury into your day-to-night looks.
Zara Skirt With Leather Paillettes ($80)
The minute we laid eyes on this embellished skirt from Zara we knew it would be the perfect addition to today's story. Not only are the scale-like leather paillettes in perfect keeping with the film's underwater setting, but they add a visually interesting and playful texture to the chic piece too! To highlight the intricate detailing, we suggest styling the skirt with a fuss-free blouse in an of-the-moment neon hue; the result will feel completely fresh for spring.
Zimmermann Charmer Ruched V Wire Bikini ($270) in Tulip
While you could very well hit the beach wearing a top made from seashells, we think Zimmermann's Charmer Ruched V Wire Bikini is a more practical and stylish alternative. We're crazy about the ruched detailing, which gives the bandeau top its Ariel-inspired, shell-like look, plus the pearlescent purple hue is flattering against all skin tones. In the water or on land, this suit is sure to generate lots of buzz.
Topshop Whamm Espadrille Leather Wedges ($130) in Lavender
These Topshop wedges are a summer must-have for many reasons, the first being their thick, chunky heels, which are reminiscent of the sky-high footwear on the Versace S/S 12 runway. Additionally, the lilac leather straps and matching canvas wedge complement spring's pastel color palette brilliantly. For a sweet summertime look, pair them with a girly white frock and style your hair into a loose side braid.
Sachajuan Ocean Mist Spray ($28)
Though we are deeply envious of Ariel's thick red locks, achieving gorgeous, back-from-the-beach tresses is no easy feat. That's where Sachajuan's Ocean Mist Spray comes into play. With just a few spritzes, the styling formula gives your hair natural-looking beachy texture and waves, while boosting volume. Apply to clean wet or dry hair, and you'll have a perfectly tousled mane in no time at all.
Theyskens' Theory Breese Shirt ($295)
We heart all things Theyskens' Theory, this sheer silk organza button-up included. With a translucent, lightweight fabric and gorgeous seafoam green color, this summery blouse offers a cool way to freshen up your warm-weather outfits. While you can keep the top in the spotlight with a pair of white jeans and neutral sandals, we also like the idea of teaming it with a tropical-print skirt for a fun and current island look.--Jessica Baker
