The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby
Monday, June, 25, 2012 As you've probably assessed by now, fellow style aficionados, the 1920s are roaring once again--in both the fashion and film realms, that is. Coincidentally or not, just months after news broke of Baz Luhrmann's highly-anticipated film remake of the beloved F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby, which hits theaters this December, a slew of designers, from Ralph Lauren to Gucci, revisited the glorified Jazz Age by showing deco-beaded flapper dresses, fringed accessories, and silky wide-leg trousers. Naturally, this full-blown '20s redux has made us nostalgic for the breathtakingly beautiful costumes worn by Mia Farrow in the 1974 adaptation. Hence, this month's long-awaited Currently Channeling story!

The Cinematic Inspiration
Chances are, this Great American Novel was required reading at some point in your education, so we'll keep it short and sweet. To jog your memory: it's 1922, there's a post-war boom, and Prohibition is in full effect. Set against the backdrop of the upper crust Long Island Sound, there's a love triangle, a decadent all-nighter, and scandals, all inspired by the incredibly beautiful, inimitably stylish, and ridiculously careless socialite Daisy Buchanan.

The Sartorial Story
Like the film, the spring runways were rich with slinky, bias-cut dresses, pretty cashmere sweaters, and luxuriant accessories. One could easily see hints of Daisy Buchanan in Etro's Silk Swing Dress ($1860, 212.317.9096) and Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti's silky nude jumpsuit, white knit cardigan, and dewy beauty look. Of course, we have our own take on Daisy too, and have rounded up a handful of fashion and beauty items to show you. So read on to learn how you can get the Gatsby look!

Inject your ensemble with some '20s flair by simply throwing on some pearl necklaces. Pearl Paradise offers a wide range of styles to choose from, so try a few in varying lengths and wrap them twice around your neck or knot them for a touch of Art Deco elegance.

Eugenia Kim Honey Hat ($325, 305.938.3000) in Ivory
Mrs. Buchanan would surely enjoy the feminine vibe of Eugenia Kim's Honey Hat. Fit for a day at the races or an afternoon brunch with the girls, this floppy, wide-brimmed topper, with its sheer panel, would pair nicely with a floral maxi dress.

Anna Sui Embroidered Printed Silk-Chiffon Top ($430)
A dizzying floral motif and subversively sexy sheer neckline and sleeves make Anna Sui's Embroidered Print Silk-Chiffon Top the perfect choice for a mansion soiree that goes into the wee hours of the morning. Go for a bold look by styling it with the designer's matching trousers!

Whiting & Davis Crystal Classics Dimple Mesh Clutch ($172) in Gold
Accessorize an intricately embroidered top or delicate lace dress with the Crystal Classics Dimple Mesh Clutch by Whiting & Davis. Rhinestone stripes give the bag a touch of Jazz Age decadence, while the metal mesh overlay keeps it feeling elegant and modern!

Club Monaco Justine Jacket ($199)
A chic, lightweight layer like this one from Club Monaco has a louche loungewear vibe similar to that of Daisy's Poiret-style robes. We think it would make an effortless addition to a little sundress.

BaubleBar Ice Floral Drop Earrings ($38)
The early '20s were all about glitz and glamour, which is precisely what these BaubleBar earrings evoke! Covered in pave crystals, these dangling, floral motif earrings are an easy way to add a touch of sparkle to any look.

Zara Lace Dropwaist Dress ($159)
If you want to go full-on Daisy Buchanan, you're going to need this white lace confection from Zara. The long, free-flowing silhouette guarantees you'll be dancing the Charleston all night long, while the sheer fabric and thigh-length slip imbue the piece with a sultry, of-the-moment twist.

BHLDN Forties Forever Slingbacks ($300) in Tiffany Blue/Ivory
Now that you've snagged all of your Gatsby-influenced clothing and accessories, your feet are going to need a little bit of Daisy too! We prefer something with a vintage look, like these darling slingbacks from BHLDN. The blue satin is divine and will add an unexpected pop of color to your look, plus the delicate ankle strap and scalloped front bring primness to the classic heel befitting our leading lady.

For a modern-day take on Daisy's ethereal frocks, snag By Malene Birger's Addina Shorts. We love their softly tailored silhouette and dusty pink hue; plus, they also transition from a daytime garden party to an after-hours fete with ease.
