Gidget

Gidget
Tuesday, July, 05, 2011 The weather is finally starting to heat up in our neck of the woods, which means we're officially spending all of our free time at the beach or lounging poolside! And although always fun, the predicament of what to wear for these outings is perpetually present! In addition to being appropriate, we also want to incorporate this season's top trends into our summer wardrobe, ideally in a way that feels fresh and exciting. So what's a girl to do? Well, in our case, we found the solution in a number of runways--most notably, Marc by Marc Jacobs' upbeat S/S 11 showing of lovely full-skirted sundresses and swim-inspired separates--and suddenly it dawned on us. The youthful and energetic vibe of the season's most memorable collections are packed with pieces that have the same spirit as one of our favorite beach-party films: Gidget!

If you have yet to enjoy this oldie-but-goodie, we'd like provide you with a brief synopsis to get you in the Currently Channeling spirit. Set in 1959 in Southern California, the story focuses on Francis Lawrence (the blond, bang-bedecked Sandra Dee), a bubbly teenager on summer break before her senior year of high school. When pressured by her friends to go "man hunting" at the beach, Lawrence meets surfer Moondoggie (James Darren) and immediately becomes infatuated with both him and learning how to surf. She convinces her parents to buy her a surfboard and begins hanging out with an all-male surf gang led by the legendary surf bum Kahuna (Cliff Robertson), and is eventually given the moniker Gidget. The film follows Gidget's many unsuccessful attempts to woo over Moondoggie, but after a fight with Kahuna inspires him to ditch the surf bum lifestyle for a career as a pilot, Moondoggie finally realizes his feelings for Gidget, and the two decide to go steady. Yes, we're suckers for a romantic ending.

With the film's beach-driven and down-right-darling wardrobe in mind, we've rounded up some pretty fantastic items--from a girly bikini to a quirky bag to a seriously cute hair accessory--that perfectly embody the all-American style illustrated throughout Gidget. Pick up a few of today's awesome picks and you'll be ready for a summer beach bash in no time!

Marni Summer Edition Monochrome Swim Top ($135, 323.782.1100) and bottom ($150, 323.782.1100)
Number one priority for today's film-inspired story: finding the perfect suit, of course! Happily, after countless hours of searching, we came across this anything-but-basic bikini by Marni. Perfect for a number of reasons--including its retro design, which reminds us of the stylish suits worn by Gidget and her friends--this two-tone two piece is sure to make a splash this summer. We especially love the bottom's precious skirt-like trim, which gives it a subtle youthful spirit, and the underwire top. In the words of Gidget, "It's the ultimate!"

Wet n Wild Mega Last Lip Color ($3) in Think Pink
We've been coveting Wet n Wild's beauty products for sometime now and are particularly fond of the brand's amazing Mega Last Lip Color. Not only does the velvet-like formula glide on easily and last for hours, it's also made with hydrating skin-care ingredients to help smooth your lips, which is ideal for those long days spent out in the sun. Think Pink might just be our favorite color from the collection, and we couldn't help but notice it's also a spot-on choice for achieving Gidget's perfectly rosy lips too!

Anya Hindmarch Beach Party Tote ($295)
If you plan on spending a good amount of time at the beach this summer, it's always a smart idea to have a functional-yet-stylish tote on hand. And while there are many enviable versions available right now, we thought this one by Anya Hindmarch was a pitch-perfect choice for today's CC story. The '60s beach-party photo looks like a scene straight out of Gidget, and we like that it's a bit quirky, without looking too kitschy. The sturdy canvas fabric makes for an excellent day bag, plus, it's big enough to store all your daily essentials, including sun block and a lightweight sweater for when the sun goes down. All in all, we think it's a summer must-have.

H&M Bow Hair Clip ($5, 310.652.0721) in Black
While we certainly took notes on Gidget's noteworthy sense of style throughout the film--we adore all of her colorful pullovers and sweet, ladylike frocks--her cute and perky ponytails were not lost on us either! In fact, the minute we spotted this bow clip by H&M, we immediately thought of the blonde teenager. As ladies who love a good hair accessory, we're huge fans of this affordable clip and highly recommend picking it up in both black and bubblegum pink. Whether it's accenting a polished ponytail or simply placed above the ear, this piece is sure to be a hit at your next beach soiree.

A.P.C. Shorts ($180) in Red
Now, we couldn't finish today's story without paying homage to the handsome men of Gidget! Inspired by the swim trunks worn by Kahuna and Moondoggie, we selected these little shorts by A.P.C. The bold red hue makes them a playful and of-the-moment choice, plus, the simple and decidedly boyish silhouette would look smart contrasted with a feminine blouse and a pair of pumps.

Bensimon Tennis Lacet Shoes ($55) in Tournesol S10
Though we typically prefer heels or wedges when it comes to our everyday footwear, every once and a while we find ourselves reaching for a more casual option. When a pair of open-toed sandals just won't do, why not turn to Bensimon's Tennis Lacet shoes for a cool, high-fashion alternative. These stylish kicks have a worn-in vintage look we adore and they come in a slew of colors, from bright yellow to a pretty violet. We can definitely imagine Gidget sporting these classic sneakers when she's not hanging ten.

Topshop Spot Tie Front Sleeveless Denim Shirt ($52) in Denim
While the bra-like crop tops on the Marc by Marc Jacobs S/S 11 runway might be too daring for some, we think this spotted version by Topshop is equally cute and much more wearable. The sun-washed denim and sleeveless silhouette make it a prime option for the sizzling months ahead, while the retro tie front is in keeping with the Gidget spirit of today's story. For an ensemble inspired by our leading lady, we suggest throwing it on over your bikini with a pair of slim cropped trousers and tennis shoes.

Spexclub Payton Sunglasses ($58) in Tortoise with Brown Lens
The key to any beach-driven ensemble--aside from the perfect suit--is a pair of cool sunglasses, hence, the reason we included these hip shades by Spexclub! We're drawn to their thick plastic frames and subtle cat-eye shape, which give them a great '60s-inspired look we adore. Trust us, you'll want to hold on to these timeless sunnies for many seasons to come!--Jessica Baker
