It doesn't take a group of fashion experts to see that crime-fighting police detective Dick Tracy is a dapper fellow. To this day, the well-known comic strip character is recognized for his signature look-at-me uniform, namely the oversized yellow trench coat and matching fedora, as well as his affinity for advanced gadgetry. The infamous ensemble was a fashion-forward twist on menswear classics (for his time, at least, since the stories are set in the early '30s), and it's a look we're beginning to see a lot of for fall too, thanks to designers such as Giorgio Armani and Miuccia Prada. As such, we couldn't resist the opportunity to uncover this season's most stylish borrowed-from-the-boys fashion with this month's Currently Channeling story!
The Cinematic Inspiration
Whether you're familiar with the comic strip Dick Tracy or not, chances are you'll need a brief plot refresher when it comes to the eponymously titled 1990 film adaptation starring Warren Beatty and Madonna. The long and short of it: a group of mobsters run by Big Boy (Al Pacino) start ruthlessly taking over small businesses and Dick Tracy sets out to put them away for good, resulting in a slew of gun battles, kidnappings, and corruption. Oh yes, and of course, there's some romance involved too!
The Sartorial Story
Wardrobe-wise, the flick was a lesson in '30s formal menswear, from the three-piece suits to the dashing outerwear. Giorgio Armani more than hinted at the era with his elongated Jacket ($2195, 212.988.9191) and pleated Pants ($995, 212.988.9191), which were worn with flat Shoes ($695, 212.988.9191) and a Fedora ($2945, 212.988.9191) strategically tipped to the side, exuding a sort of suave, Tracy-like confidence. On the other hand, one could easily imagine designer Miuccia Prada was influenced by the film's well-dressed villains. Outfitted in a daring purple and metallic gold striped Jacquard Jacket ($1950, select Miu Miu boutiques) and matching Pants ($1050, select Miu Miu boutiques) with Silk Gazar Shirt ($830, select Miu Miu boutiques) and Silk Jacquard Tie ($245, select Miu Miu boutiques), the Miu Miu woman can be likened to mobster Big Boy. Keeping those references in mind, we gathered a smattering of stylish items to help you achieve the Dick Tracy look with ease!
Get The Look
H&M Hat ($18)
To top off your look with some Tracy-influenced panache, simply grab H&M's felt fedora, which bears a striking resemble to the hats shown at Giorgio Armani. Styling tip: wear your hair in a low bun or ponytail to keep your look polished and professional.
Nixon The Murf Watch ($400)
The sleek Murf Watch by Nixon doesn't function as a two-way radio, but we promise it will add a dose of retro sophistication to your winter ensembles. While this ticker is sure to earn compliments worn on its own, we're going to style it with a handful of colorful bracelets for an intriguing look.
Banana Republic Classic Belted Trench ($198)
Tracy's oversized, bright yellow trench may not be practical for everyday wear, but this classic khaki iteration from Banana Republic is a timeless alternative you'll love for many years to come. Wear it now over a summery dress, then give it a fall update with a Fair Isle sweater and jeans.
Coach Legacy Leather Basket Clutch ($188) in Carnelian
When considering all the possible bags that suit today's masculine-feminine roundup, Coach's Legacy Leather Basket Clutch was an easy selection. Its unique, briefcase-style shape offers a stylish nod to Tracy's crime-solving profession, and we especially love that the clutch is compact yet still spacious enough to hold all of your daily essentials and more!
Bottega Veneta Intrecciato Leather Gloves ($380)
It's a well-known fact that every good detective needs a chic pair of leather gloves, so if you're going to invest in only one style this season, make it Bottega Veneta's Intrecciato Gloves. The wrist length is completely accessible for both day and night wear, plus the metallic gold sheen will lend your outfits a hint of that futuristic look we love for fall. It should be noted that we also adore Diane von Furstenberg's Colorblock Leather Gloves ($185) in Black, which are a bit more affordable, yet equally desirable.
Stuart Weitzman Devon Shoes ($375, available in September) in Jet Mirror
The menswear-inspired oxford gets a modern update with Stuart Weitzman's Devon Shoes, thanks to a patent leather exterior and metal cap toe. Take a cue from Tracy's style book, and wear them with one of the season's covetable suits, or go for a girly contrast with a pleated miniskirt.
Tommy Hilfiger Foulard Printed Shirt ($80)
Since a majority of today's items are androgynous, a feminine element or two was necessary to help balance out the Dick Tracy look. That's where Tommy Hilfiger's Foulard Printed Shirt comes in. This silky neck-tie blouse is just the sort of piece you need to bring some girly charm to a tailored pantsuit or add interest to an understated trench.
House of Exposure Helmut Red Limited Edition Lipstick ($25)
Mastering the sultry pout of leading lady Breathless Mahoney--a.k.a. Madonna--will be a breeze when you have House of Exposure's Helmut Red Limited Edition Lipstick on hand! Created by makeup phenom Poppy King and House of Exposure founder, Periel Aschenbrand, the Helmut Newton-inspired lipstick delivers a highly-pigmented, long-lasting rouge color with a moisturizing sheen.
Motel Rocks Skinny Jordan Jeans ($90) in Black and White Stripe
If you fancy the bold stripes at Miu Miu, but fear the head-to-toe styling may be too much for real life, then we suspect you'll enjoy these like-minded Motel jeans. The neutral black and white striping lends itself to a myriad of outfit options, whether you add a leather top for a night out or pair them with a printed blouse for a truly eye-catching result.--Jessica Baker
