If you haven't seen Waters' 1990 musical, you need to put it in your Netflix queue immediately. Set in Baltimore in 1954, the film focuses on Johnny Depp's character Wade WalkerÂ--otherwise known as "Cry Baby"Â--and his rebellious friends. The gang, which is called the "Drapes," stands out for two reasons: creating turmoil within their conservative town and their outfits, which are comprised of stylish body-hugging pencil skirts, revealing tops, leather jackets, and greaser hairstyles. (The whole look is very much like Isabel Marant's fall collection!) The movie is Waters' take on the classic Romeo and Juliet story, as Cry Baby falls in love with the opposition, good girl and "Square" Allison Vernon-Williams, as played by Amy Locane. While the plot itself is exactly what you might expectÂ--lots of Drapes vs. Squares action and lovers torn apart/reunitedÂ--the wardrobe is ridiculously fun and totally perfect for fall. And, if you need more reasons to view this gem, consider the following: Ricki Lake, Traci Lords, and Iggy Pop are all in the film! The cast is cool and the clothing is completely currentÂ--no wonder we're Currently Channeling: Cry-Baby!
Theory Electra Leather Motorcycle Jacket ($845)
Nothing evokes that bad-girl vibe more than black leather clothing. That said, simply donning this Theory motorcycle jacket would land you in the Drapes gangÂ--no questions askedÂ--even if you're a play-by-the-rules kind of girl. Movie mentions aside, we think the tough zipper details and soft leather are sure to lend any outfit an undeniably rebellious streak.
Ray-Ban Clubmaster Sunglasses ($145) in RB3016
While some cat-eye frames suggest a prim and polished style, we like how these Ray-Ban sunglasses offer an edgier, more masculine take on the trend. Not only do these retro shades give off a counter-culture vibe, the red trim also provides an unexpected pop of the season's hottest colorÂ--redÂ--making them the perfect fall accessory.
Coach Lexington Elongated Case Watch ($283)
The bad-girl look is not particularly accessory-heavy, which is why we thought this Coach watch would work as an appropriate addition to any sleek, fifties-inspired ensemble. With its stainless steel bezel and simple tank shape, this timepiece is anything but girly. The black patent strap would pair well with your biker jacket for a night out, though it's elegant enough to work with a more subdued daytime look too.
J Brand 7/8 Low Rise Cropped Pencil Leg Jeans ($158) in Ink
The cropped jean seen on Isabel Marant's F/W 10 runway made us swoon over the return of the pedal pusherÂ--albeit a cooler, more stylish version of that abbreviated silhouette! These cropped jeans from J Brand are dead ringers for the Marant ones, and, since the price point is much lower, they won't break the bank. We think they would look just right with a fitted leather jacket and a pair of kitten heels.
Joe's Jeans Spectrum Belt ($58) in Rust
As you know, red is the color of the season, especially for accessories like handbags and shoes. A bold belt is another excellent way to work this must-wear color into your outfit, as it will update any ensemble and draw attention to standout pieces. Accordingly, we were excited to find this crimson option from Joe's Jeans, which would add just the right amount of intrigue to a pair of cropped jeans.
American Eagle Outfitters Chunky Knit Short Sleeve Sweater ($39.50) in Heather Gray
If you are looking for a chunky knit top this fallÂ--as you should beÂ--let us suggest this short-sleeved style from American Eagle. Its snug fit is ideal for creating your own pinup "sweater girl" look, plus we adore the neutral heather gray shade and sweet cap-sleeve silhouette.
Giuseppe Zanotti Leopard-Print Calf Hair Pumps ($595)
Although the kitten-heel craze may make us stiletto-lovers a little unsure, we just might get on the (slightly) lower-heeled bandwagon with this pair from Giuseppe Zanotti. The leopard print on these 3.5-inch heels is practically perfect; we can't wait to take walk on the wild side with them!
MAC Fabulous Felines Leopard Luxe Superslick Liquid Eye Liner ($17.50) in Marked for Glamour
Another must for any fabulous fifties femme is a killer cat-eye, and what better way to achieve that feline style than with this new product from MAC? We tried it recently and fell in love with the formula immediately: after it dries (15 seconds after you apply it), it still looks wet, which is just ridiculously cool and sexy. Try all the different shades, we have a feeling you'll buy multiple colors!
Marc by Marc Jacobs Two Tone Patent-Leather Loafers ($295)
While the attitude-driven runway looks involve pointy heels, why not go for Cry-Baby-inspired authenticity with cool pair of flats instead? These black and white patent leather loafers are super fresh and definitely an unexpected choice. We think Depp would approve: we certainly do!
Tory Burch Checkmates Scarf ($195)
While Cry-Baby's characters probably sported scarves to cover up their hickies, you won't need a reason to wear this geometric-print iteration from Tory Burch. It's so cute, you're sure to find yourself reaching for it time and time again, as it provides the perfect perk to any outfit! Â--additional writing by Natalie Yost
