A League of Their Own

A League of Their Own
The World Series may be over, but as today's story can attest, the athletic spirit of America's favorite pastime is still lingering in Who What Wear's headquarters. We've definitely got baseball on the brain, only we're not focused on the recent showdown between the Rangers and the Cardinals, we're thinking about one of our favorite '90s flicks: A League of Their Own! Why, you may ask? Well, it just so happens that this season's '40s-inspired outfits-specifically the stylishly sporty styles seen at Miu Miu and 3.1 Phillip Lim-are perfectly in sync with the competitive spirit of this must-see film, making it a splendid selection for November's Currently Channeling!

Before diving into our picks, we'd like to start with a quick plot refresher to ensure you're all up to speed. The film is set in 1943 during World War II, when Major League Baseball was shut down and the first women's league was created by Chicago Cubs owner Walter Harvey (Garry Marshall), to make money. While scouting potential players across the U.S., Ernie Capadino (Jon Lovitz) discovers Dottie (Geena Davis), who not only has the looks to attract male fans, but also has promising talent too. He convinces Dottie and her sister Kit (Lori Petty) to tryout for the league in Chicago. Along with nine others, including Mae Mordabito (Madonna) and Doris Murphy (Rosie O'Donnell), the girls make the league and are assigned to a team, specifically, the Rockford Peaches. The team's manager, Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks), is a former MLB player and current alcoholic who doesn't take the job seriously and often clashes with Dottie over decisions about the team. Despite the questionable management, the Peaches quickly establish themselves as the team to beat, but sibling rivalry between Dottie and Kit causes problems, forcing Jimmy to trade Kit to a rival team, the Racine Belles. The Peaches make it to the World Series against the Belles, but lose in the final game when Kit hits a homerun. After the championship game, Dottie chooses to move back to Oregon and raise a family, while Kit remains a legend in the league.

Now, while we can't say enough about the Peaches' off-duty ensembles-all of the tea dresses are divine, to put it mildly-we've decided to take inspiration from the film's athletic-influenced wardrobe for today's story. From a timeless varsity jacket to insanely stylish lace-up sneakers, we'd have to say we hit it out of the park with today's A League Of Their Own-inspired pieces!

Club Monaco Brooke Hat ($59) in Suede
The baseball hat is a quintessential part of any sports uniform, which is why we'd be remiss if we didn't include the perfect topper in today's story. The cap on our minds is Club Monaco's Brooke Hat, which has a retro shape that reminds us of the hats worn by Dottie and the rest of the team. Even better: it's a spot-on and affordable alternative to the styles Miuccia Prada showcased on Miu Miu F/W 11 runway, like this camel and black Two-Tone Cap ($395)!

Coach Classics Leather Madison Satchel ($358) in Brass/Vermillion
If you're in search of a chic, ladylike bag to accompany your '40s-inspired looks this season, we'd like to direct you to the Madison Satchel. Originally introduced in 1986, this sophisticated carrier is one of five iconic styles that have been reissued as part of the Coach Classics Collection. We admire its clean lines, timeless shape, and bold tomato red hue, which is perfect for giving your fall outfits a splash of color!

3.1 Phillip Lim Meggie Driving Gloves with Wrist Belts ($275, 212.334.1160) in White
While a baseball glove isn't a fashionable accessory, per se, you have to admit these driving gloves by 3.1 Phillip Lim are a decidedly chic alternative. We're completely smitten with their vintage spirit, especially the gray leather and delicate wrist strap, plus we like that they are equal parts tough and feminine-just like the women in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League. In other words, they're a nifty way to add a hint of the A League Of Their Own look into your wardrobe this fall.

See by Chloe Sam Sneakers ($350) in Gray
Our footwear choice for today's story was easy: See by Chloe's Sam Sneakers. It's hard to resist the old-school vibe of these fashionable high-top wedges, which are available in a lovely putty/gray hue, as shown above, as well as brown and black. Make them your own by teaming them with a pair of skinnies for the weekend or with a leather mini skirt for a cool, downtown look.

Washborn The High Waist Shorts ($42) in Grey/Red
If you don't fancy yourself much of a dress girl, there's no need to fret, because we've found a pair of A League of Your Own-inspired shorts that are sure to be a hit this season. Unlike the traditional uniform's below-the-knee pants, these are quite flattering thanks to their high-waisted silhouette. Additionally, we approve of the gray and red plaid print, which is just one more reason why these shorts are a pitch-perfect choice fall.

Steven Alan Libby Dress ($265) in Black Houndstooth
When considering the league's untraditional-yet-stylish uniforms, we knew Steve Alan's Libby dress would make a great addition to the story-it has an almost identical silhouette! In addition to its look-a-like fit, we absolutely adore the button detailing and pleated a-line skirt, which gives the otherwise understated frock some girlish charm. With its neutral color and unfussy design, it's sure to be a go-to in your wardrobe this fall!

Rag & Bone Varsity Jacket ($695)
Keeping in line with today's athletic theme, we simply had to include a varsity jacket in our roundup. Now, we've seen some pretty great iterations of this collegiate outerwear over the past few seasons, but our personal favorite has to be this jacket by Rag & Bone. We're fans of the classic color combo, especially the leather sleeves, which give the timeless piece an au courant look. While it's an excellent option for a weekend jeans-and-t-shirt combo, we also like the idea of injecting your after-hours look with some unexpected preppines by styling it over a LBD. Of course, if you're in the market for a more budget-friendly version, be sure to snag Forever 21's Varsity Jacket ($25) or Mossimo Supply Co.'s Varsity Jacket ($45); the latter comes in three great colors!-Jessica Baker
