No Lie: Heels Can Be Just as Comfortable as Sneakers

Allyson Payer

How to make walking in heels more comfortable is a subject we've discussed at great length (see our editor in chief's, Viola Davis's, and celeb stylist Marissa Webb's tips for it). While we love wearing sneakers every opportunity we get, some occasions (and outfits) simply call for heels. Since our expertise lies in what looks cool as opposed to the works of the feet, we reached out to someone who holds the knowledge we lack: Robert Khorramian, a podiatrist and foot and ankle surgeon with Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center.

According to Khorramian, "The trick to finding heels that are just as comfortable as or maybe more than sneakers is finding shoes that are spongy and cushiony." Specifically, he said, "Crocs would be my top choice—they make platform wedge shoes that are very spongy and comfortable while providing good support, especially for people with plantar fasciitis, flat feet, or those who have lost the fat pads on the soles of their feet. However, EZ Spirit and Clarks are two other brands, that also make comfortable heels that are both cushiony and spongy."

If these podiatrist-approved brands aren't exactly your aesthetic, not to worry—we did our due diligence and found a variety of other heels from brands that are known for creating "cushiony" and comfortable options. Additionally, we included some that we can endorse based on personal experience and some highly recommended comfy options found via good old-fashioned research. If all else fails, you can always add our favorite insole for heels to your shoes: Dr. Scholl's DreamWalk Women's High Heel Insoles, for just $8 (so we advise buying them in bulk).
