Career Code: Meet Hollywood's Go-To Jewelry Designer
In honor of Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power’s new book, The Career Code: Must-Know Rules for a Strategic, Stylish, and Self-Made Career ($17), we’re running an interview series featuring 17 questions (in honor of the book’s 17 chapters) about the work lives of the most inspirational female leaders in the fashion industry. So far, we’ve tapped Rebecca Minkoff, Sally Singer, Rachel Zoe, and more. Up next? Jennifer Fisher.
If a piece of jewelry catches your eye while you’re flipping through the pages of Vogue or thumbing through a fashion blogger’s Instagram feed, there’s a good chance the bauble was designed by Jennifer Fisher. The jewelry veteran’s eponymous brand recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, racking up countless well-dressed fans in the process. (Gigi Hadid, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Selena Gomez are among her celebrity admirers.)
Industry experts have also given Fisher high praise: She was a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist in 2012 and nominated for the CFDA Swarovski Accessories Award in 2014. Given her monumental success, we couldn’t think of anyone better suited to dishing out career advice.
Read on to meet Hollywood’s go-to jewelry designer, Jennifer Fisher!
“Not glamorous. It’s a lot of hard work. My job requires overseeing all aspects of the business. I do all of the design and social media, as well. I am involved in everything down to the smallest details. When it’s your name on the door, you want to make sure everything is handled correctly. Yes, as we have grown, I have obviously stopped micromanaging every detail, but I still have a hand in most decisions, which makes for a very busy day every day! And it never stops because of handling all the social media, as well!”
“I actually spend very little time designing and sketching, which is always shocking to people. My background is in business marketing, so I actually oversee all social media for my brand. Since I used to be a stylist, I also understand how to pull for editorial, and I spend a lot of my day advising and helping my PR assistants on press pulls, not to mention stepping in the showroom and assisting on client sales.”

“I actually don’t remember—I’m too old.”
“Hillary Clinton, for obvious reasons. She is a mother and all-around boss having dealt with more than her share of ups and downs as a mother and wife in politics and business.”
“I don’t necessarily think it’s about go-to resources; it’s important to be out and about always seeing and meeting new people.”
“I regret wearing too much jewelry all at once when I first started my jewelry company. It’s just not me now; I don’t know what I was thinking. It’s one of those bad haircut moments that you look back on.”

“Highly organized, nimble employees who have a strong work ethic.”
“I run my company—I feel powerful every day! I am always most comfortable in some form of denim in my workday. I have a huge, varied collection of denim. Designer, vintage, embellished, simple, you name it! I also collect vintage tees and always mix high and low pieces. If I’m in jeans and a tee, I wear one of my Saint Laurent blazers and Vetements boots. These shoes make you feel instantly powerful with an edge (and are so comfortable!).”
“I have an A-type personality, so I actually like to run my own errands.”
“I look at a photo book, take a walk around New York City, and then I go have a lychee martini at Mr. Chow.”
“I believe in straightforward, direct truth always. Just be honest and polite. It’s business. Do the right thing. Give notice with enough time for the company to replace you and follow through on any loose ends.”
“Being lazy and entitled. It won’t get you anywhere in this business—or in any business, for that matter.”
“My morning ritual is definitely my egg situation: having to cook and to make something for myself and my husband, and then whatever my kids want to eat on a given morning. It’s feeding my family, but I find it very relaxing. It’s almost like therapy before I have to go into the office. Even though it’s hectic, it’s something that I look forward to every day. My nightly rituals are tucking in my kids and kissing them goodnight before bed.”
“Don’t ever take anything too personally in business.”
“I’m excited about my 10th-anniversary enamel collection, which we recently launched. The collection incorporates enamel and brings color into the line. My website redesign will also be launching soon—it will give us a seamless and cleaner interface for customers, which will make the shopping experience much more enjoyable.”
