Seeing White Bandanas All Over Fashion Week? Here's Why

Tommy Hilfiger took over Venice Beach this week with this season's Tommy x Gigi show, where we caught up with Hadid to talk S/S 17 fashion trends. Among the sea of patchwork denim, sporty silhouettes, and playful colors were white bandanas that models wore on their wrists. While they're not part of the latest Tommy x Gigi collection, the simple accessory symbolizes a bigger movement happening in the fashion industry right now.

Business of Fashion launched the #TiedTogether movement urging the global fashion community to wear bandanas during fashion month "amidst growing uncertainty and a dangerous narrative peddling division," as stated by Imran Amed, the publication's founder and editor in chief, in an open letter. The letter explains that the visual statement serves "as a sign to the world that you believe in the common bonds of humankind—regardless of race, sexuality, gender or religion."

Tommy Hilfiger kick-started the initiative on his runway, and other designers are expected to participate, including Diane von Furstenberg, Phillip Lim, Prabal Gurung, and Thakoon Panichgul. The official #TiedTogether page asks everyone beyond the fashion community to get involved by wearing a white bandana as part of your outfit and tagging it on social media. So far, the movement has garnered over 4000 tags on Instagram and counting.
