Explain your job in one sentence please: Beauty overload! My team is like a walking Sephora, if that makes any sense at all. What is a typical workday like for you? Every day is different, which is perfect for someone cursed (or perhaps blessed in this day and age of social media!) with a short attention span. Some days Ill be editing or writing all day, other days Im at shoots or backstage, and other days Im focused on social media or beauty events. The day flies by"when you love what you do, it doesnt feel like work. What is your go-to work outfit? I love a dress"its an all-in-one outfit that permits me to pull something on and focus on the important matters at hand such as what shoes to wear or bag to carry! My favorite dresses are from Prabal Gurung, Thakoon, and Proenza Schouler. How did you get this job? Did you always know you wanted it? I interned at Harpers Bazaar in college and that was a light-bulb-over-the-head moment for me"I was pre-med for most of my college education! I think my story proves that theres no one way into the magazine/fashion industry. Keep your eyes/ears/heart open to all the possibilities out there. Try everything. Because you never know! What did you do before you started your company/freelance career? Pre-med at Johns Hopkins. Clearly that didnt work out! What's the best part of your job? The worst? The best part of my job, besides the hundreds of nail polishes that flow through my office, is meeting Teen Vogue readers and really feeling like I make a difference. The worst? That there arent enough hours in the day to get all that I need to do done. Surely someone at Google must be working on an algorithm for extending the number of hours in the day, right? How important is having a fashionable/chic work area? My idealistic answer is very, but given the now-public mess of my desk, my more realistic answer is that a) as long as you know where everything is and b) youre inspired in your workspace, then its all good! Do you email or use the phone more? I am 95% on email and still surprised when people leave me voicemails. Most people who know me well know that if you email me, youll usually get a response within ten minutes What surprises you the most about your career? How the stereotypes of fashion and media (generally unpleasant, competitive, witchy) are deeply untrue. Ive made such wonderful friends in the industry and am surrounded support, friendship, and generosity of spirit. Dont believe what you see on television! What changes do you make to your look if you have to go to dinner or drinks immediately after work? Blush and Tarte Lip Stain in Amused (a great hot pink!). What items do you think every working girl should own (clothing and accessories)? A statement bag (I love the Proenza Schouler PS1) and amazing heels (that you can walk in). Do you use a Mac or a PC? (or Blackberry or iPhone?) MAC and iPhone all the way! Hello, Instagram! What do you listen to when you're working? Teen Vogue interns and assistants chatting outside my office ^.^ What do you try to teach your interns/assistants? Efficiency, the importance of being detail-oriented, and that nice people can get ahead (I hope). Have you fulfilled your career goal or do you still have more to achieve? Hopefully more to achieve. Never stop dreaming or evolving! What advice would you give to someone who wants to emulate your career path? Attitude is everything and remember that everyone has to start somewhere"never, ever roll your eyes at a task or think youre too smart/senior/accomplished to do something!
