Black & White
While a black-and-white ensemble is hardly a revolutionary trend--one could even argue that this ultra-chic color combo never goes out of style--thanks to the F/W 11 runways, noir et blanc outfits are noteworthy anew! The collections were rife with black and white looks this season, ranging from Celine's streamlined interpretation (crisp white turtlenecks paired with sharply tailored black pants) to Stella McCartney's play on proportions (slinky white dresses worn with oversized black coats with rounded shoulders) to Rue du Mail's color-block pieces (sultry, body-hugging frocks teamed with white cage heels). In addition to the runways' ample offering of black and white ensembles, we've noted a ton of celebrities donning these traditional colors in a myriad of ways as well. From Emma Roberts' ladylike frock to Kate Moss' boy-meets-girl outfit, we've rounded up some of our favorite black and white looks in today's Best Of story!
WHO: Diane Kruger
WHAT: At a dinner celebrating the 68th Venice Film Festival in Italy late last week.
WEAR: Chanel Fall 2011 Couture dress; Chanel Cruise 12 striped clutch; Jimmy Choo Vamp Sandals ($750).
WHY: Diane Kruger never disappoints with her red carpet ensembles, and this Chanel Haute Couture dress was definitely no exception! We think the contrasting tank-top-meets-peplum overlay is a great twist on colorblocking and makes this frock a truly one-of-a-kind piece--just as we'd expect from the masters at Chanel! Sadly, couture dresses are out of reach for most of us, but there are certainly some worthy alternatives out there if you're smitten with Kruger's look. Consider snagging either Robert Rodriguez's Black Label Daisy Two-Tone Dress ($425) or Chico's Colorblock Della Dress ($139) and you'll have a chic outfit a la Kruger in no time!
WHO: Liya Kebede
WHAT: Feting Mario Testino at the El Museo Gala in New York earlier this summer.
WEAR: Jason Wu button-down shirt, pants, and bowtie from S/S 11 collection.
WHY: When we first spotted Liya Kebede's ensemble, we instantly fell in love! We're particularly crazy about the oversized bow tie--such an unexpected element livens up her otherwise pared-down look. If you adore the boyish charm of a bow tie as much as we do, you're in luck because we've found some stellar pieces that will help you emulate her outfit. We think Moschino's Bow-Front Silk Blouse ($895) and Prabal Gurung's Ruffled Silk-Georgette Blouse ($800) are amazing, investment-worthy options, but if you aren't keen on spending so much money, J. Crew's Bonnie Blouse ($88) will certainly do the trick! In case you don't have the perfect pair of black skinny pants in your closet already, we recommend picking up Gap's Really Skinny Pants Really Skinny Pants ($35) to complete your Kebede-inspired outfit!
WHO: Kate Moss
WHAT: Arriving at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Paris back in May.
WEAR: Mango Smoke Blazer ($160, 212.343.7012), Gus Tank ($60, 212.343.7012), Joseph Pants ($60, 212.343.7012), and Consta2 Shoes ($100, 212.343.7012).
WHY: In our minds, Kate Moss can do no wrong--especially when it comes to styling noir et blanc pieces! We love how she wore these classic colors in a masculine-meets-feminine way by pairing a menswear-inspired blazer with a low-cut silky tank and skinny trousers. Instead of opting for a cocktail dress for your next fete, take a cue from Moss and don a sleek pants-and-blazer combo. Don't know where to start? Fret not--we've got you covered, dear readers! Simply start with a sophisticated topper, like Elizabeth and James' Emery Blazer ($395) or ASOS' Blazer with Invisible Fastening ($64), and add a basic black tank, such as French Connection's Silk Tank Top ($58). Finish off your look with a pair of skinny pants--we think Banana Republic's Martin Fit Skinny Pants ($90) and Daughters of the Liberation's Sateen Skinny Zip Pants ($98) are both great options!
WHO: Celine F/W 11 runways
WHAT: Look 26
WEAR: White Graphic Intarsia Arm Block Crew Neck ($1450, 212.826.8900); Optic White Thermal Cotton Skinny Fit Turtle Neck ($740, 212.826.8900); Black Mat Radzimir Tapered Pants ($1500, 212.826.8900); High Vamp Pumps ($740, 212.826.8900).
WHY: If your closet tends to be devoid of anything frilly, ultra-trendy, or ornately embellished, you probably worship--along with the WWW team--Phoebe Philo's designs for Celine, which are always uncomplicated yet intriguing, subtle yet stylish. Her F/W 11 collection was, as usual, a real winner in our books. This specific look especially caught our eye; we're totally enamored with its simplistic silhouette and fluid lines, not to mention the colorblock sleeves and perfect-for-absolutely-anything trousers. While this ensemble would work for nearly any occasion, we think it would be particularly ideal for the office come fall and winter! If you're similarly thrilled, we suggest investing in a great turtleneck, like Eileen Fisher's Silk Jersey Turtleneck ($148), American Apparel's Baby Rib Long Sleeve Turtleneck ($27), or Derek Lam's Ivory Turtleneck Pullover ($670), and a pair of fantastic black pants, such as Alexander Wang's Tuxedo Trousers with Cutaway Spat ($395).
WHO: Emma Roberts
WHAT: Spotted at the Petit Ermitage hotel in West Hollywood celebrating the launch of Westward, Kate Spade New York's bag collaboration with stylists Emily Current and Meritt Elliott.
WEAR: Kate Spade Ribbon Mirabelle Dress ($416); Brian Atwood pumps.
WHY: If you're searching for an ultra-feminine way to wear black and white, let Emma Roberts guide you. The actress chose a sweet Kate Spade number and wisely added bold pops of red. Her crimson lipstick, nail polish, and pumps were the perfect finishing touches and looked ravishing against her striped dress. We also adore the frock's sweetheart neckline and full skirt, which adds up to one glamorous ensemble, indeed! Craving a similarly ladylike look a la Roberts? We think Coast's Leeta Chevron Stripe Dress ($126) and The Limited's Black and White Stripe Tube Dress ($98) are great alternatives. And don't forget the red accents! Give your lips a sultry flair with Dior's Addict Lipcolor ($26) in Red Desire, paint your nails with Sephora by OPI's Nail Colour ($10) in High Maintenance, and pick up either Nine West's Kaboose Pumps ($89) or Brian Atwood's Maniac Patent Platform Pumps ($580) to finish off your Roberts-inspired outfit!--Erin Fitzpatrick
