Molten Metals

Molten Metals
Thursday, December, 16, 2010 Your calendar is no doubt stuffed with holiday cocktail parties galore right now, so we figured you might welcome a few festive beauty ideas for all of these upcoming events. (Plus, New Year's Eve is right around the corner!) Rather than reaching for your favorite red nail polish or attempting some sort of updo, this season we highly suggest adding some glimmer to your signature celebratory look via metallic beauty products. Whether it's stunning silver eye shadow inspired by Nicole Richie or a stone-studded barrette like Eva Mendes, these molten metals are a must-try trend for the holidays!

Eyes
If you're searching for a beauty look that has the same effervescent spirit as a glass of champagne, we have a tip for you: put down the smoky shadow and reach for something with a little silver or gold shimmer instead. You can wear just a smidge of metallic liner on your lower lids, add a pop of pale gold shadow to the inner corners of your eyes like Scarlett Johansson did at the Mango Fashion Awards in Barcelona, or go for a full-blown silver lid, similar to the look Nicole Richie showed off at a LACMA gala earlier this fall--it's flattering and festive any way you do it!

To achieve this look, don't worry about technique, just focus on finding the right product. Topping our list right now is Make Up For Ever's Rock For Ever Aqua Eyes ($36) eyeliner set, which is a tiny kit that comes with five travel-size pencils in the most perfect colors ever. In addition to the Silver 8L pencil, which is shown above, you get four other essential shades, including an excellent bronze, graphite, gold, and a matte black too. Though waterproof and smudge-proof, these pencils are soft enough to be used as eye shadow, which we definitely suggest doing! Giorgio Armani's Eyes To Kill Eye Shadow ($32) in White/Black Grey is another noteworthy product with a unique texture (it's not a powder or a cream, exactly, but something lovely in between), plus you can use it wet or dry for different dramatic effects.

Nails
Okay, so we've definitely been hammering home our love for metallic nail polish all season long, but we've saved a few of our favorite products for this very story! As seen on the fall runways and the hands of countless ladies--including Ginnifer Goodwin, who wore Chanel's limited-edition nail polish in Steel to a party at LA's MOCA last month--these dark lacquers look most chic in shades of gunmetal or pewter.

Admittedly, there's a slew of stellar products on the market right now, but we have tried everything and have narrowed it down to these top three contenders. Thus far, our favorite polish is definitely OPI's Lucerne-tainly Look Marvelous ($8.50); it is subtly shimmering and the ideal unfussy shade of gunmetal. If you prefer warmer hues, we suggest checking out Dior's Vernis Nail Enamel ($21) in Czarina Gold, which is more of a black-gold hue with an antique and lustrous look. Finally, don't miss Chanel's newest polish--which is from their Spring 11 collection and set to hit counters any day now--Black Pearl. It's dark enough to give your nails a smidge of attitude, but the pearlized formula ensures you'll still look polished.

Hair
Our final trend is also our favorite: haute-rocks hair! Originally inspired by the insanely gorgeous barrettes that were pinned into the models' hair at Rodarte's S/S 11 show, we think a bold hair accessory is the perfect accent for the holiday season. These chunky barrettes are tough and delicate, so they're sure to appeal to a wide range of tastes, plus they're going to be huge for spring, so we suggest getting a jump on the look now! As for styling particulars, at Rodarte the Aveda team (who were responsible for the show's hair) placed the stone-embellished barrettes just above the models' ears, but we think these barrettes also look amazing worn low on the head, as Eva Mendes demonstrated at a Glamour event celebrating female filmmakers earlier this fall. Steeve Daviault--the guru responsible for Mendes' fabulous hair--used a barrette he found at a beauty supply store in Los Angeles, proving that you don't need a designer accessory to achieve this look!

If you're ready to rock this must-have accessory too, we've got the most amazing item to suggest: the Fool's Gold Barrette ($36) by Luv AJ. If you visit WhoWhatWear.com regularly, you no doubt know that we're huge fans of the entire Luv AJ line--especially the pyrite-studded pieces--hence our excitement about this barrette. Designed specifically for this story and available exclusively at Shopbop, this chunky barrette is definitely a showstopper, so be sure to buy one today!
