Get the Look/Charlize Theron
We're not shy about our love for Charlize Theron. We're fanatical about her style choices-even the risky ones, because she never looks boring-and, to point out the obvious, her beauty is astonishing. We recently flipped over the makeup she wore to attend Christian Dior's Cruise 2008 show and wanted to know how we could recreate this look at home. Charlize's incomparably talented pal and beauty maestro, Shane Paish (who's also the International Makeup Advisor for Christian Dior), kindly answered our queries. Read on for the product details of this golden, summery, bronzetastic look...
We responded to the gleaming eye makeup Theron sported, which was accomplished with several of Dior Beauty's latest offerings. Paish used the latest 5-Colour Eyeshadow palette in Sunset Café 440 ($52, sephora.com). "This new shadow palette is all gorgeous copper and metallic brown colors," Paish said. "It's much easier to use a metallic shadow, rather than a matte, for this almost smoky look. The colors blends so easily and you get a slightly flashy, almost wet-looking, eye." (Makeup nuts take note; the 5-Colour palettes were recently named the best powder eyeshadow by InStyle.)
To give her eyes an extra pop, Paish then applied Dior's Crayon Eyeliner (waterproof) in Trinidad Black 094 inside Theron's lids ($24, sephora.com). As we've written before, it's always smart to select waterproof or water-resistant eyeliner when you're lining the insides of your eyes because it doesn't smudge. This is of particular importance come summer when heat + liner = a smeared mess. The mascara Paish used is Diorshow Black Out Mascara in Kohl Black 099 ($23, sephora.com). This limited-edition mascara is only available at Sephora, and has a slightly smaller brush than the regular Diorshow mascara. Black Out Mascara also happens to be Hillary's single favorite product in the universe right now (not that you asked).
Theron's overall beauty look focused on polished skin and a gleaming eye, so skin-wise, Paish kept the majority of her face matte. He then selectively highlighted a few key areas with Dior's Skinflash Radiance Booster Pen in Candle Light 002 ($33, sephora.com). The Skinflash contains light-reflecting pigments that make the skin look radient, and it can be worn on bare skin, under foundation, or over foundation. "I applied Skinflash around Charlize's eyes, on her temples, and on the highest part of her cheekbone," Paish said. "Since the rest of her skin was matte, this gave her skin a glow that kept her from looking two dimensional in photographs."
Final touches came from a light dusting of peachy-pink blush (like DiorBlush in Peach Veil, $32.50, sephora.com) and a neutral lip (Paish likes DiorRouge Replenishing Lipcolor in Box-Office Beige 296, $26, sephora.com).
The overall look shown here is wonderfully inclusive. The burnished copper/bronze eye has a similar sexiness to a traditional smoky eye, but softer and more summer appropriate. We can't promise that these products will make you a dead-ringer for Theron, but we think you'll look smashing nonetheless.
