Dark Angels

Dark Angels
Traditionally, spring and summer usually call for bright shades of makeup-like either baby or bold pinks and vibrant corals. We're all for this, of course, but perhaps that's why we're suddenly seeing a color counterpoint to all that cheerfulness. In the last few weeks, notable celebs like Kirsten Dunst and Kate Bosworth have slicked on a major, dark, Vamp-y mouth. Paired with the season's soft clothes, this juxtaposition of strong lips and girly garments gives a quirky coolness.

However, what's neither quirky nor cool is attempting this look and ending up with messy mouth. To learn how to avoid potential product potholes, we turned to Physicians Formula Celebrity Makeup Artist, Joanna Schlip. The in-demand Schlip tends to the faces of young beauties like Scarlett Johansson, Hilary Duff, and Avril Lavigne, and graciously shared her lip tips with us today.

A statement mouth is only as good as its application, so naturally you'll wanted to avoid the dreaded "bleeding lipstick" lines. For makeup stays put, Schlip starts by applying concealer around the mouth and lip line. She then powders this area, and then lines and fills in lips with a pencil that matches the lipstick. When she knows her client needs something extra resilient, Schlip applies a stain to the mouth (like Urban Decay's Ink Lip Stain, $17, sephora.com). The actual lipstick is applied last, with a lip brush of course. For the most modern look, Schlip recommends choosing a product with slightly matte finish and skipping gloss.

As anyone who's ever experimented with lipstick knows, finding the exact, correct color is difficult, especially when trying for such a deep purple/berry shade. Schlip swears this problem is avoidable-just look for a lipstick palette instead. This way you'll have multiple dark shades for optimum customizing of your color. Physicians Formula Plump Palette Plumping Lip Color in Wines is an inexpensive option ($7.95, drugstore.com) or try Make Up Forever's 5 Lipstick Palette in Cherry Red Harmony ($39, sephora.com).

If you'd rather just a single color, pick up cult-favorite Poppy King's Lipstick Queen in Wine Sinner ($18, barneys.com) or the highly covetable, super limited edition Enchanting by Smashbox for Imitation of Christ Lipstick ($22, smashbox.com) that was created for the fashion line's Fall 2007 show.
