Cat Eyes

Cat Eyes
Friday, September, 07, 2007 Dear readers, we hope you have steady hands, as the long-discussed cat eyeliner trend is officially here. In the past few weeks we've noted the old-school glamour style popping up on the red carpet, as celebrities like Lily Allen give their liner a feline flick.

The cat eye has a rich history in Hollywood, as everyone from Sophia Loren to Angelina Jolie has worn this look. The style of liner shown on the fall runway was exaggerated and practically Winehousean in its boldness-just look at the gorgeous, totally crazy, Liz Taylor/Cleopatra look at McQueen. While some stars like Jessica Alba and Gwen Stefani wear this eye with red lips, we think it looks even fresher to keep the rest of your makeup easy and light, like Lily Allen did at the GQ Awards in London this Week. Her glowing skin also keeps the overall effect modern as well.

As far as product goes, we've mentioned the excellence of the Pat McGrath-created Cover Girl LineExact Liquid Liner before (used at LV) as well as L'Oreal's new Voluminous felt tip pen; both are great drugstore offerings. While not new, Shu Uemura's Liquid Eyeliner is considered the go-to classic in the beauty industry. ($33, nordstrom.com) If you don't want to make up your mind about what shade of liner to buy, check out Too Faced's Liquif-Eye Liquid Liner. ($17.50, beauty.com) The tube contains a waterproof/smudgeproof serum and a thin brush. You can drag the brush across any of your favorite eye shadows and then use them as liner.

If you're a total newbie to cat eyeliner, the easiest way to dip into the look is to get a pot of cake/gel/cream eyeliner and an extremely thin brush like M.A.C.'s 209 Eyeliner Brush. ($17, maccosmetics.com) These formulations are easier to work with than a straight liquid and are relatively fool proof-given you've got a skinny enough brush! Smashbox recently debuted their Fall Decadence Collection Jet Set Waterproof Cream Liner ($22, sephora.com) or the Cake Eyeliner from Australian makeup artist Napoleon Perdis. ($17, sephora.com).
