This Documentary Features Fashion's Most Dramatic Showdown Ever

Erin Fitzpatrick

Haven't heard about the epic Battle of Versailles from 1973? Allow us to give you a quick refresher. According to Vogue, the event was intended to be a fashion show to raise money for Versailles, but it ended up being a "heated" showdown between the leading French and American designers at the time. The names will definitely sound familiar: On the French side, you had Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Cardin, Hubert de Givenchy, Emanuel Ungaro, and Marc Bohan for Dior. The participating Americans included Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, Halston, Anne Klein, and Stephen Burrows.

And now fashion's most dramatic night is the subject of a new documentary, aptly dubbed Battle at Versailles. It comes out March 6 on the fashion channel Made to Measure, but Vogue already has a sneak peek at the film for you.
