What It's Really Like to Dress Angelina Jolie for a Movie

Erin Fitzpatrick

Angelina Jolie's red carpet looks have been turning heads for years, but plenty of her on-screen outfits have been just as memorable. (Who could forget her Maleficent get-up or her Lara Croft looks?) And as it turns out, her new movie By the Sea, which is set in 1970s France, is no exception.

In an interview with Vogue, the movie's costume designer, Ellen Mirojnick, spilled all the details about collaborating with Jolie on the glamorous outfits. "She's very, very, very hands-on," Mirojnick told Vogue. "She has an idea, she really expresses it clearly. She likes to be absolutely participatory in the designs and the choices."

Mirojnick went on to praise Jolie's skills as both an actor and director. "Working with her is a dream," she said. "She is very articulate, very knowledgeable of what she wants to convey as a director, and as an actor she’s great in the fitting room." As for the outfits themselves? Mirojnick cited Jane Birkin as the primary inspiration for Jolie's looks.
