In his preppy and polished S/S 12 collection, Steven Alan cleverly teamed several outfits with the same Wide Brim Hat ($158), which offered the perfect finishing touch to everything from sweet, printed dresses to more casual, beach-ready outfits, such as the Fritz Top ($165) in Indigo and Mercer Shorts ($198) in White. The Panama straw hat's ample brim frames the face and adds a little visual intrigue to an otherwise straightforward outfit.
We've also noticed quite a few style-minded celebrities performing hat tricks these days. Both Chloe Sevigny and Anne Hathaway wore classic toppers while on vacation in Miami Beach. Sevigny donned Eugenia Kim's Marcel Boater Hat with a wide black ribbon, an effortless addition to her crisp white shirtdress. Just a month later, Hathaway sported a similar-looking version, albeit in a paler shade, with her vibrant beach cover-up. Alek Wek, on the other hand, dressed up her floppy straw topper while attending the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic earlier this month in Jersey City. The model's feminine Shoshanna dress is complemented by her textured, wide-brimmed lid, which also provides some extra sun protection!
Since hats are a travel must-have (tip: they help hide static airplane hair!), we're not surprised that Diane Kruger and Mary-Kate Olsen both incorporated straw toppers into their airport ensembles. Kruger wore one of her favorite Borsalino fedoras, adorned with a striped blue ribbon, while arriving in Los Angeles in early June. The preppy accessory pulls together her laid-back look, which consisted of a t-shirt, loose printed pants, and a bundled-up scarf. Last month at LAX, Olsen accented her basic leather jacket and skinny jeans ensemble with a few key accents, among them forest green slip-ons and Maison Michel's Straw Trilby Hat ($490). Leave it to Olsen to find a chapeau with an especially distinctive feel, thanks to its open-weave straw material and thick navy band!
Feeling head over heels for this trend? We rounded up a few noteworthy styles you might want to try this summer! For those who desire extra sun coverage, Kate Spade New York's Dunes Lane Fringe Straw Hat ($78) in Orange and Hat Attack's Fringed Open Weave Sunhat ($74) in Taupe are your best, wide-brimmed bets. Both versions feature playful embellishments--the former comes with a red ribbon and fun fringe trim, while the latter's crown is encircled with a chic printed band.
However, we also love the dapper style of fedoras a la Kruger's. If you do too, Club Monaco's Chevron Fedora ($70) has a dented crown and bold pattern than conveys a debonair vibe, while Brixton's Scout Hat ($50) in Tan is a pork-pie style (considered a type of fedora) ideal for a beach excursion or en route to your next vacation. For a splurge-worthy pick, look no further than Eugenia Kim's Dree Straw Bucket Hat ($253) with a buckle leather band and frayed brim. The celebrated milliner's versatile topper is chic and easy to take anywhere--if this cap fits, you'll definitely want to wear it!
You'll also want to take note of these straw lids: Maison Scotch's Straw Trilby Hat With Sash ($53) is a wallet-friendly option that mimics Hathaway's, and Gucci's Straw Boat Hat ($325) is a simply luxe version with navy and cream grosgrain trim. We also appreciate the laid-back vibe of Bop Basics' Textured Sunhat ($98) and Melissa Odabash's Stetson Straw Hat ($110). Pair either of these with a summery maxi dress for a stylish boho-inspired ensemble!--Tiffany Tse
