Pendant Necklaces

Pendant Necklaces
Tuesday, August, 23, 2011 We spy with our little eyes a fall accessory essential...pendant necklaces! It doesn't matter if it's petite and dainty (Alexa Chung), a bold medallion (Celine Pre-Fall 11), or totally tasseled (Karolina Kurkova), these long necklaces are back in a big way and making quite a statement this season. The best part: a pendant can elevate almost any look, from casual weekend attire to fancy red carpet frocks, which is exactly why we're highlighting them in today's Accessory Report.

While it's safe to say that pendant necklaces never really went away, there are a few designers responsible for putting these statement pieces back on the map. For example, we are absolutely mad for the pendant Phoebe Philo presented in the Celine Pre-Fall 11 collection. The designer caught our attention when she paired a combo of plaid prints with a simple-yet-chic sterling silver disc pendant, which we're sad to report is already sold out! The necklace adds interest to the laidback, cozy separates, giving the overall look an understated cool.

In addition to our notable designer reference, we've also spotted a number of awe-inspiring pendant necklaces around the necks of some of our favorite stylish ladies. A few, like Alexa Chung and model Cara Delevingne, opted for smaller iterations, and the result was quite chic. Chung selected Chopard's gorgeous Platinum and Diamond Necklace with Pear-Shaped Brown-Yellow Diamond (price upon request, 800.CHOPARD) for the premiere of Sleeping Beauty at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, which she wore with a vintage white Balenciaga dress. We love how the diamond pendant echoes the elegant and refined nature of her red-carpet look. A few days earlier, at a Met Gala after-party, Delevingne accessorized with a similarly dainty pendant, though she opted for a lust-worthy Genevieve Jones design. We totally approve of Develigne's stunning Burberry Prorsum dress, especially since a plunging neckline is a foolproof way to keep your pendant necklace the focal point of your ensemble.

While we certainly adore petite versions of this jewelry trend, nothing beats the bold and dramatic look of oversized pendants as Lake Bell and Karolina Kurkova recently showed us. Bell impressed us at a party celebrating the NARS book Makeup Your Mind: Express Yourself in New York back in May when she showed up wearing Lia Sophia's Global Tassel Necklace with Black Diamond Crystals and Moss Green & Tortoise Resin ($375), a smart jewelry choice that punched up her all-noir separates, including a Madewell top and Decades Denim jeans. We also approve of the H&M Circle Tassel Necklace ($25, select H&M stores) Kurkova wore to the Ischia Global Festival dinner in Italy last month. The tassel pendant is reminiscent of a dream catcher, which perfectly complements the earthy quality of her Shakuhachi Luxe Utility Cutoff Pocket Shirt ($80) in Camel and Rag & Bone Skinny Pants ($990) in Washed Brown Leather. Ashlee Simpson also opted for a large pendant necklace for her appearance at the launch party of Lia Sophia's Industrielle II collection in Hollywood late last month. The actress selected said jewelry brand's Beveled Necklace with Black Diamond Crystals and Paprika Red Enamel ($300) in Matte Silver and paired it with an equally standout leopard-print Mara Hoffman dress and red strappy platform heels for a truly stylish and attention-grabbing after-hours look.

Now, the official start of fall may not be for another month, but who says you can't start wearing pendants now? Certainly not us! Happily, there are loads of stunning necklaces available, and as always, we are more than delighted to share some of our favorites with you. If you're in the market for a luxurious option, we'd like to direct you to Dannijo's Court Necklace ($320) in Magenta, which is quite cool and feminine, thanks to its sleek look and mix of Swarovski elements. We also approve of BaubleBar's glamorous Bold Champagne Drop Necklace ($80) for a more budget-friendly alternative. Those seeking smaller pendants a la Chung and Delevingne should check out Milly's Single Pendant ($95) or LOFT's Mid Oval Pendant Necklace ($29.50), as both will give your ensembles a charming finish. Want something with a little more presence? We've got a few of those as well! House of Harlow 1960's Enamel & Crystal Sunburst Pendant Necklace ($135) and Avant et Apres' Vintage Gold Fringe Medallion ($100) are both striking statement pieces that can amp up a simple tee or a LBD, while ASOS' Extra Long Cherry Blossom Cameo Pendant ($14) has a lovely vintage vibe. Our final pick for today's accessory story is Need Supply Co.'s K/ller Collection Single Pendant ($85). We were immediately drawn to the edgy spirit of the brass crystal-shaped pendant and think it would look awesome worn with a few other necklaces for a visually interesting, layered look.--Jessica Baker
