Kate Moss by Joe Zee
The challenge, as always, was to create a look that not only befits our muse, but pleases our WhoWhatWear.com readers as well, and we knew Zee was more than qualified for the task. Though it's a bit embarrassing to admit, we've had a work crush on Zee for ages now. It started back in 2004, when we picked up a copy of his brilliant luxury lifestyle and shopping magazine, Vitals, and devoured it on our subway ride home. The publication might have technically been created for men, but that didn't stop us from enjoying the heck out of the beautiful layouts and pithy voice (and we adored its secondary sister publication, Vitals Women too). The now-defunct monthlies may be a part of our past, but fortunately we get to enjoy Zee's talents in the present, thanks to his current gig as at our alma mater, ELLE.
In addition to his day-to-day responsibilities-which include such delightful duties like styling ELLE's cover girls, writing a hysterical how-to-wear column for the magazine, and starring on the must-see show Stylista (Tim Gunn, watch your back)-Zee also created an exclusively online supplement, Fall A to Zee. It's a smartly crafted alphabetic guide of the season's best trends and the key pieces needed to achieve an of-the-moment look. Since Zee's picks thrilled us so (hello gray pointy Chloe ankle boots!), we were sure he'd choose equally exemplary items for Ms. Moss-and we were right! Read on for all of his spot-on selections and style wisdom galore.
1. Fallon Browning Bangle ($125 each)
Zee is a big fan of designer Dana Lorenzo's affordable jewelry line, Fallon, and thought these mesh-accented bangles would be ideal for this story. Shown above in gold, gunmetal, and sterling silver, the braided bracelets add a bit of texture to your outfit and will work with almost any type of personal style. Order your own by emailing email@example.com. Also, check out other amazing Fallon pieces at Barneys, like the Sammy Jo ($325), Krystal ($385), and Colby ($295) Collars, all of which are named after Dynasty's feisty heroines.
2. Bess Studded Moccasin Mid Bootie ($220, 212.219.0723)
As we've pointed out a number of times over the past two years, Miss Moss likes her moccasins, in all their variations. That said, Zee's selection of an ankle-grazing pyramid-studded version from Bess in New York is simply spectacular. We've also seen the toughed-up mocs on Mary-Kate Olsen, so if you pick up a pair, know you'll have some ultra stylish doppelgangers out there.
3. Obesity & Speed Cut Out Sides Tank Dress ($175)
The cult label Obesity & Speed has lots of stylish supporters, like Agyness Deyn, Leigh Lezark, and future Who What Wear GOTM Isabelle McNally, all of whom love the brand's edgy tanks, tunics, and t-shirt dresses. Joe Zee is a fan as well, and selected the above cutout mini (which would also work as a shirt) for Moss.
4. Dolce Vita Cher Booties ($172)
A stylephile like Kate Moss could never settle for just one pair of shoes, so we wanted to give her a second option. Zee chose these birdcage cutout booties with a four-inch heel because they perfectly satisfy the season's fetish footwear trend in a reasonable and wearable way. Available in four colors (we're fond of the gray), they'll look great on bare feet now or with opaque tights when it gets chilly.
5. Current/Elliott Skinny Slouch Jean ($216)
We weren't surprised that Zee included a piece from the stylist/celebrity/editor-approved denim line, Current/Elliott, in his Moss-inspired selections. "Flaws" like paint splatters and distressed patches enhance these slim, slightly relaxed jeans, giving them an adorable sort of slacker chic. Well played, Mr. Creative Director!
6. Alexander Wang Herringbone Jacket ($725)
Much like Moss's ability to revolutionize jean trends (the light-colored, high-waist, wide-leg vintage Chloe pair she wore to London's Fashion Week two years ago subverted the dominant dark, low rise, skinny silhouetted paradigm), she also helped usher the oversized blazer into our collective closets. This double-breasted herringbone version from Alexander Wang has three-quarter sleeves and cool zippered pockets, making it the perfect addition to any fall wardrobe.
7. Yves Saint Laurent Large Muse Two ($1895)
We've seen Ms. Moss with a range of bags over the years, but of all the totes in the world, Zee selected a new classic for our muse: the Yves Saint Laurent Muse Two in blue patchwork croc-embossed leather. The bag's clean lines and understated hardware make it a memorable and timeless selection.
